Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 4 E 5 Private School

Go To

Child Colin's limitless energy has reached a breaking point for the vampires, and they decide to figure out a means of getting him to stop pestering them so much.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Blatant Lies: Nandor claims that, now that he has gotten what he wants out of the Djinn, he will be using his remaining wishes for philanthropy. Cue the documentary crew cracking the door open and overhearing him using some wishes to enhance his personal appearance.
  • Camera Abuse: Child Colin, after getting his hands on a sword and forcing the vampires to run for their lives, attacks the camera with it, resulting in a crack in the screen.
  • Celebrity Casualty: Laszlo and Nadja bring Sal Vulcano of the Impractical Jokers to act as Child Colin's celebrity parent. He does not know what's going on, annoying Laszlo who then snaps his neck.
  • Didn't Think This Through: During the interview, they continually fail to consider the implications of the changes they make to the family setup, needing to reset when they belatedly realize things like convincing Headmaster Warren that Colin is his own son defeats the point. They also overuse their hypnosis until he suffers a stroke shortly after their meeting, a thing they knew could occur but didn't think about.
  • Did You Get a New Haircut?: The others notice there's something off about Nandor's Djinn-changed appearance at the start of the episode but can't pin it down, ascribing it to getting some kind of haircut. This makes him feel insecure enough to keep requesting further and further physical changes to his face until he can barely see from all the skin being manipulated by the Djinn. At the end, Laszlo comments that it's a good thing Nandor laid off the plastic surgery, which isn't the actual cause but does serve as a close enough guess that Nandor angrily walks away fuming at Laszlo.
  • Hugh Mann: The vampires do a hilariously bad job at feigning normalcy, with tacky outfits, subpar attempts at refreshments, and a clear lack of thought of what modern schools require for applicants. However, eventually Warren and Sean have become subjected to so much hypnosis that neither really has the capacity to actually notice how off the vampires are, and they just roll with whatever is being said.
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Nadja and Laszlo point out that having a djinn at Nandor's beck and call means they could simply wish various problems away, but Nandor quickly lies that the Djinn won't cover those under his wishes because he doesn't want to be nagged into solving everyone else's problems when he could use them for his own personal gain.
    • Guillermo realizes, after several failed attempts at getting Headmaster Warren to agree on enrolling Colin into school, that they could have just hypnotized him into enrolling Colin in the first place instead of going through the whole rigmarole of constantly mind wiping him to figure out the most appealing family for him. Nadja rejects that because they're in way too deep and wants to stick to their plan.
  • Stealing from the Till: As Nadja's accountant, Guillermo has secretly been embezzling funds to get his mom and himself nicer stuff. He tries to bribe the documentary crew into going along with it. Nadja has been doing the same thing, though instead of trying to bribe them, she threatens to murder them and their friends and families.
