"Whoo. Is anyone else still pretending to be excited?
"The Paladins and the Lions have come together, but they are far from ready to take on the Galra Empire, as they cannot even form Voltron on demand. Therefore, Allura instigates group training to strengthen the team's connection with their lions and each other.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Hunk begs Allura to have mercy on them, she doesn't comply.
  • Beam Spam: How Allura cheerfully says she would run a diagnostic on the castle defenses and inspire the group to form Voltron.
  • Breather Episode: Absolutely no fights with the Galra here, with the conflict purely being how everyone needs to learn to work together.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: Allura gets very aggressive with their training, to the point where even Shiro thinks they need a break, but she refuses.
  • Facepalm: After the shield exercise, Coran is getting increasingly exasperated.
  • Failure Montage: For the other paladin, each exercise only makes them increasingly frustrated, but Shiro manages to fly the Black lion with his eyes closed.
  • Flat Joy: Hunk after he asks if the group was still pretending to be excited while piloting.
  • Food Fight: The Paladins against Allura and Coran. This is what gets the group to finally work as a team and let them form Voltron.
  • Foreshadowing: Pidge tries to keep the others from prying into his mental image of what appears to be him with a girlfriend of some sort. It will soon become apparent that it is because a close inspection of the picture would reveal that is depicting something else entirely.
  • Game of Chicken: Lance taunts Keith into doing this as they attempt an exercise on flying their lions while blindfolded. They both crash.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: As it turns out, the team formed Voltron on pure instinct in the heat of battle the last time, and when tasked with forming Voltron on demand, nobody can figure out how.
  • Mental Picture Projector: Coran uses one of these as a training exercise. The goal is for everyone to visualize their lions and then combine the projections into Voltron. When first hooked up to them, the devices project an image of what's on their mind.
    • Shiro: The Kerberos mission
    • Keith: His shack in the desert
    • Lance: His family
    • Hunk: Food
    • Pidge: A blurry picture he doesn't want anyone else seeing.
  • Large Ham: Coran believes Allura's acting wasn't selling that they were in danger so he begins to scream over the intercom on how the Galra's have decapitated her.
  • Motivated by Fear: Allura telling the Paladins that she had to run a diagnostics on the castle and causes lasers to start shooting at the lions, adding that it should help their training. She gleefully tells a panicked Keith, "Let fear by your guide! Form Voltron!"
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The transport to the lion hangars involves many of the same mechanisms as the original series. How needlessly long the process is is lampshaded when Hunk falls off of his zipline, and as a result, his speeder leaves without him forcing him to walk the entire way.
Hunk: Seriously though, can't they park these things a little closer to the bridge?
    • Having trouble figuring out how to form Voltron, Keith suggests they try manually stacking the lions on top of each other in their respective positions. Shiro utters the famous "I'll form the head" line as he gets into position.
    • The first time they try it, Hunk tries to be the "head" of the tower, when he's supposed to be the leg. Keith reminds him that Shiro is the head, and Hunk asks "All the time?". This takes us back to Voltron Force, when the pilots were able to change which lion formed the center of Voltron.
  • Quieter Than Silence: As the Paladins are stacked in the pyramid and attempt to focus, a quiet dust of wind blows pass them.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lance forgoes the training exercise as the castle shoots at them and tries to head back to the castle. However, the raised particle barrier keeps him out.
  • The Maze: One of the training exercises.
  • This Is a Competition: Lance and Keith do this for about two of the training sessions.
  • Trust-Building Blunder: Most of the paladins fail their exercises because they either don't trust the other, or in Lance and Keith's case, make everything a competition.
