- Bait-and-Switch: We are led to believe Floki and Horik will free Jarl Borg. In the end the two do nothing to stop his execution.
- Hope Spot: By the end of the episode, Jarl Borg believes he's being rescued from imprisonment and certain death, only to be taken to an altar to be executed.
- Pet the Dog: Bjorn gives the imprisoned Jarl Borg, who has been languishing in a dungeon without food, a piece of bread.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Even Rollo and Torsten are visibly disturbed by the gruesomeness of the blood eagle execution.
