Tropes

  • Artistic License – Law: Fred, a fifteen-year-old minor, is depicted as being sent to an adult prison for murder when he would have been sent to a juvenile dentition center where he would have been kept until he turned eighteen and they would have decided whether to set him free or switch him to actual prison.
  • Artistic License – Sports: Daphne uses lethal violence to defeat her opponent in a self-defense class tournament, which should have gotten her disqualified if it wasn't for her mothers allowing her to advance to the finals anyway.
  • Blatant Lies: When Norville asks his father why he has a calling card for the Crystal Cove Insane Asylum in his cardigan, he passes it off as having a friend who works there called Dr. Bad Excuse. Norville isn't buying it.
  • Break Them by Talking: Deconstructed, Velma prides herself on harsh criticisms to stand up for herself and her criticism often leaves people in tears or angry. While in a fight against Daphne in front of the school, she tries this tactic by guilefully reading Daphne's diary in an attempt to expose her emotional vulnerability. Rather than accept these criticisms and leave during the match, Daphne is infuriated and punches Velma hard enough that she flies out of the ring and slams a brick wall in front of a roaring crowd, who actually pitied Daphne after this humiliation and were more than eager to see Velma punished for using such an underhanded tactic.
  • Guns Do Not Work That Way: Taser example. The taser used on Fred is visibly modeled on the Taser X2, which has two chambers that are loaded and operated independently of each other (like a double-barreled shotgun). There is no cartridge in either chamber, or when fired one prong shoots from each chamber. Obviously, a taser will not fire without cartridges, and when a taser X2 is fired it shoots two prongs from the selected cartridge, not one prong from both. There are taser models (specifically the Taser 7) that work by firing one prong at a time from different chambers, but they are visually distinct from the Taser X2 and never fire two prongs simultaneously.
