Recap / Ultimate Spider-Man S1 E10 "Freaky"

Go To

Mesmero causes Spider-Man and Wolverine to switch bodies, and each must get used to the other abilities in order to fend off Wolverine's rival, Sabretooth.

Tropes:

  • Audible Gleam: Peter's teeth gleam like this when he (actually Wolverine in his body) hits on Mary Jane.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: When Spidey, in Wolverine’s body, sends Sabertooth flying, he unknowingly says the first half of Wolverine’s catchphrase: “I’m the best there is at what I do,” but instead of finishing it says “and I have no idea why I said that.”
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: Wolverine in Peter's body cocks his right eyebrow while hitting on Mary Jane.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Initially, Spider-Man and Wolverine are hostile towards each other, but by the end of the episode they have become friends, more or less, which was likely helped by having to deal with each other's powers.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: The premise of the entire episode, as described above.
  • Has a Type: Wolverine, whilst in Peter's body, attempts to make a move on MJ, stating that he's always had a thing for redheads. Due to her and Peter deciding to be Just Friends, MJ is understandably put off by this.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Wolverine struggles a bit with Peter's powers while in his body. Whenever his spider-sense goes off he always questions "What is that tingling?", and fails his initial attempt at web-swinging
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Wolverine threatens Mesmero by putting his fist under his chin, then popping the claws on either side, asking "Wanna try for three?" This mirrors what he did in the graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills.
    • The premise of the episode is based on a story in the Ultimate Spider-Man comics.
    • When Wolverine in Peter's body hits on Mary Jane, he says "Baby, I do like me a redhead". This is likely a nod to his love interest in the comics, Jean Grey, who is also a redhead.
  • The Mind Is A Play Thing Of The Body: The longer Spidey and Wolverine are in each others bodies, the more they realize they are acting like each other. This includes Wolverine realizing he is talking as much as Spidey and Spidey using the first half of Wolverine’s catchphrase.
  • Oh, Crap!: Flash's reaction when Wolverine as Peter is about to beat him up.
  • Twinkle Smile: Wolverine does this in Peter’s body when flirting with MJ.
