Recap / Titans S 3 E 13 Purple Rain

Go To

As the Titans prepare for their final confrontation against Scarecrow, they have to figure out a plan to save Gotham's citizens when he ends up triggering a bomb that claims many casualties.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Alien Sky: When the Lazarus Pit water reaches the clouds, they turn purple.
  • The Atoner: Jason declines to return as Robin or rejoin the Titans because he thinks that nothing he ever does will ever make up for what he has done as Red Hood. Although he reconciles with Dick and Bruce, he decides to leave Gotham.
  • The Bus Came Back: Bruce appears again since the events of "Souls".
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Probably the biggest example in the series. The Titans manage to completely save Gotham and defeat Scarecrow, dealing him just deserts by turning fears back on him so he can never attempt to break out of Arkham again. While Blackfire returns to Tamaran, she promises to find a way that Conner will be able to join her, and has mended her relationship with Starfire. Donna temporarily leaves the Titans to pass on Hank's final message to Dawn, but will possibly rejoin the team down the line. Barbara is reinstated as commissioner, cooperating with A.R.G.U.S. in overseeing the city's recovery. Jason reconciles with Bruce and chooses to leave Gotham to atone for what he has done as Red Hood. Finally, Dick welcomes Tim to the team and is implied to train him as the new Robin.
  • Easily Forgiven:
    • Blackfire forgives Conner for destroying her ship and preventing her from returning to Tamaran, noting that she would have done the same if it was the opposite.
    • Conner forgives Dick for paralyzing him with kryptonite, noting how he also prevented Blackfire from returning to Tamaran out of selfishness.
  • Heal It with Water: The Lazarus Pit is turned into rain that resurrects people killed by Scarecrow's poison.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: At the end of the episode, Rachel transfers the fears of the Lazarus Pit that she absorbed into Scarecrow, torturing him with them forever.
  • Mass Resurrection: Rachel, Kory and Blackfire team up to mix the water of the Lazarus Pit into the clouds, where Conner jolts it with lightning to turn it into rain, resurrecting everyone it touches. Through this procedure, everyone killed by Scarecrow's poison is brought back to life.
  • Mind Rape: Rachel does this to Scarecrow by transferring the fears of the Lazarus Pit to him.
  • Mythology Gag: Also doubles as a Shout-Out, but the episode's title references the Prince song of the same name, the late singer having done music for Batman (1989).
  • The One That Got Away: The security question for the router in Wayne Manor asks the name of "the one that got away". The answer ends up being "Selina Kyle".
  • Photographic Memory: Conner remembers the blueprint of Blackfire's airship down to the last detail, and can recreate it back from scratch.
  • Secret Agent: It's revealed that Vee is actually an agent of A.R.G.U.S.. She was originally sent to monitor the Lazarus Pit and find out what Ra's al Ghul was planning in the long run, but ends up helping the Titans save Gotham from Scarecrow as well.
  • Sequel Hook: Vee mentions that Ra's al Ghul may be planning something with the Lazarus Pit in the future. She also invites Donna to join A.R.G.U.S..
  • Series Fauxnale: Unlike previous season finales, this episode doesn't end on a cliffhanger, and leaves very few unresolved plot points. The Titans and their allies all get their happy endings, and even Red Hood is provided closure. Scarecrow is neutralized permanently, with only the distant threat of Ra's al Ghul being mentioned by Vee. The series was renewed for a fourth season, nevertheless.
  • Shout-Out: Scarecrow sings "If I Only Had a Brain" to himself while in the Batcave arming his bombs.
