Recap / Tiny Toons Looniversity Whatever Happenedto Babsy Bunny

Go To

The premiere episode of Tiny Toons Looniversity's second season.

Babs, Buster, Hamton, Plucky, and Sweetie visit the big city of Acme Acres for a Bugs Bunny retrospective, but when the show is sold out they find themselves with time to kill. While city native Sweetie shows them around, Babs takes numerous pictures of her friends but gets none of herself. Meanwhile, when cute animal calendar photographer Elmyra Duff gets a call telling her that people are tired of puppies and kitties, she sets out to find some new "cutie-wooties" to photograph. She comes across Babs at a taco truck and convinces her to come back to her studio so she can finally get some photos of herself, a process which ends up taking many hours and many costumes. The others (minus Plucky, who got miffed at a caricaturist's rendition of him and is holding a focus group to discuss the picture) get worried that Babs has been gone so long, so Sweetie uses some of her city contacts to track her down. Elmyra guilts them into joining Babs for a group shot. They're eventually rescued by Plucky, whose desire for perfect pictures of himself matches (and eventually overpowers) Elmyra's desire to photograph him. As they head back to the bus stop by the retrospective, Bugs Bunny himself shows up and invites them in as his backstage guests.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Personality Change: In the original series, Elmyra thought Hamton was one of the few animals who wasn't cute and cuddly, and was a dirty pig in need of a bath, which was ironic since Hamton was obsessed with cleanliness. In this series, she finds Hamton just as cute as the other animals.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: On the original series, Elmyra's character was defined by 1) her overbearing love of cute animals, and 2) being dumber than a sack of hammers. While the former stays in place here, she's become much more cunning, easily exploiting Babs's sadness about not having any pictures of herself to get photos of both her and her friends.
  • Adaptational Late Appearance: In the original series, Elmyra's first appearance was in "The Looney Beginning", the first episode. In this series, she doesn't appear until this episode, the Season 2 premiere.
  • Baby Talk: Just like in the original series, Elmyra talks almost excwusivewy wike this (complete with her original voice actor!) It's commented on by some of the characters during the hunt for Babs:
Carmela: Yeah, a little girl, real clingy, talks like a witch cursed her to sound like a baby.
Construction pigeon: She was with this redhead who squawks like a haunted doll.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Buster goes into this when he learns Babs has gone missing and basically held captive by Elmyra.
  • Big Eater: Hampton orders from several food trucks and puts the dishes on a tall stack, which gets finished by the time he and the others realize Babs hasn't come back.
  • The City: Acme Acres. It's largely inspired by New York City, complete with Brooklyn accents, checker cabs, and references to "The Umpire State," but a hotdog-shaped parody of the Bean tosses a little Chicago in as well.
  • Construction Catcalls: Sweetie gets some of these from a pigeon. She does not take it well, and takes it even less well when he later comments on Babs's ears.
  • Costume Evolution: In the original series, Elmyra wore a blue hair bow with a gerbil skull in it, a blue blouse, a white skirt, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. While she still retains her hairbow, socks and shoes in this series, she now wears a black long-sleeved shirt and purple jeans.
  • Deranged Taxi Driver: Carmela is a downplayed example who seems like a relatively normal person... except for the gleam she gets in her eye when she asks if they want to take a shortcut.
  • The Dreaded: Elmyra comes across as this for the patrons of Top O' the Tater:
O'Malley: That's all the redheads in Acme Acres. Except for... [record scratch]
    All: Elmyra Duff!
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The pigeon construction worker makes a comment that Babs has big ears, which Sweetie takes offense to. This can be seen as an analogy to commenting a woman about her breast size.
  • Furry Reminder: At one point, the pigeon construction worker does head-tilts the same way birds do.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: As Buster, Babs, Hamton, and Sweetie discuss how to escape Elmyra's photo shoot, Hamton asks where they are going to find an animal so focused on their own looks that they'd want their picture taken all day. Cue Plucky coming in.
  • Jerkass Realization: Elmyra invokes this in Buster, Hamton, and Sweetie, making them feel bad for not including Babs in their pictures when she is the one taking them.
  • Model Scam: A G-rated version, where Elmyra tricks Babs (and later Buster, Sweetie, and Hamton) into a photoshoot for a cute animal calendar by promising to take pictures commemorating her first trip to the big city.
  • Mythology Gag: One of Elmyra's discarded calendars has the silhouette of her old co-stars Pinky and the Brain on the cover, while another is from 1992, the year the original series went off the air.
  • Noodle Incident: After she, Buster, and Hamton get tricked by Elmyra into a photoshoot for cute animal calendars with Babs, Sweetie mentions this isn't the first time it happened to her.
  • Overly Long Gag: O'Malley calling for the patrons if they've seen Babs, complete with a time card saying "Ten Minutes O'Later".
  • Pesky Pigeons: Naturally, the only Funny Animal inhabitant of Acme Acres that our heroes meet is one of these.
  • Running Gag: While Plucky is constantly posing dramatically for the camera, just before the shutter clicks he gets stepped on, squished, or cut off somehow.
  • Shout-Out: Elmyra's first photoshoot with Babs has her playing the part of "Hare of Easttown."
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: After Sweetie, Buster, and Hamton go on a whole detective hunt to find Babs relying on Sweetie's city friends and lucky run-ins with people who saw her, Plucky independently tracks them down the exact same way:
Babs: Plucky! How'd you find us?
Plucky: Easy. I went to the pickle guy, the taxi driver, then the redheads.
  • The Taxi: Carmela the taxi driver is the first real lead that Buster, Sweetie, and Hamton get as to Babs's whereabouts, and she gives them a ride to the costume store she had taken Babs and Elmyra to.
  • Too Spicy for Yog-Sothoth: When Plucky comes into her photography studio and offers to pose for Elmyra, she is enthralled at first. Plucky's vision for just how he wants to be photographed eventually gets on her nerves and leads to her kicking him out.
  • Welcome to the Big City: It's Babs, Buster, and Hamton's first time in Acme Acres, and it starts with Hamton taking a big whiff of the city air and throwing up in a trash can.
