After the group returns to their inn, they talk about confronting the Screaming Phoenix Killer. Ken San Un is determined to fight Setsu Mu Syou in a duel the next morning, because he considers himself expendable and because, if he wins, then he would make a name for himself. Kei Gai offers her help in the form of spells. Kichou, however, feels that confrontation should only be used as a last resort. Syou Fu Kan gets tired of the talk and decides to head off on his own. He goes to the Devilwood Flower Garden himself and asks Setsu Mu Syou to hand over the Soul Echo Flute. Setsu Mu Syou refuses and they prepare to battle, but Kichou defuses the situation and asks Setsu Mu Syou the favor of becoming the performer of the Soul Echo Flute; in exchange, Kichou offers his own life to Setsu Mu Syou once they have reached the summit of the Demon Spine Mountains. Setsu Mu Syou agrees. Meanwhile, Betsu Ten Gai suspects that Kichou's group will head to him.
