Recap / 3-2-1 Penguins! Episode 5: The Doom Funnel Rescue

Go To

Mail gets delivered to Grandmum's cottage. Jason offers to race Michelle to the mailbox. Michelle accepts his offer and wins the race to the mailbox. Jason, desperate to hear something from the outside world, begs Michelle to give him the mail. Michelle, however, feels like teasing him a little. In retaliation, Jason tries to take the mail from her. Grandmum comes in and sorts out the mail situation, and quotes a Bible verse to Michelle about giving help to those who need it. Among the bills and coupons, there's a card for Michelle and letter from Trevor to Jason, which he later reads.

Trevor in his letter talks about his time at Space Camp and how he wished Jason was there with him to experience it. After Jason finishes reading his letter, Grandmum suggests that he write back to him.

The Doom Funnel Tropes:

  • A.I.-cronym: B.I.N.G. (Beneficial Imprinting Neuralnet Gizmo) has the ability to imprint on someone by taking their picture and is highly beneficial in stopping the titular doom funnel.
  • All Animals Are Domesticated: Jason finds a mouse and names him Preston. Preston still acts like a mouse, but doesn't seem to mind being handled at all. Later on, Michelle even dresses him up in a bridal gown.
  • Binocular Shot: Occurs when Fidgel is looking for a gas station in space.
  • Disqualification-Induced Victory: In the Spaceship Drivin' man music video, Scaly Slim passes the finish line first, but gets his trophy taken away from him when it's revealed that he cheated.
  • Hover Bot: B.I.N.G. is circular in shape and has retractable mechanical arms. His main purpose in this episode is to serve as Kevin's mechanical sidekick until he plugs up a doom funnel and it is realized that B.I.N.G. would be a better mechanical sidekick to Professor Wordsworth.
  • Reverse Telescopic Vision: This happens to Captain Zidgel, when Fidgel tries warning the rest of the crew about a highly combustible gas tank at the gas station. Zidgel looks through the wrong end of Fidgel's binoculars and thinks that the tank is miles away, until Fidgel turns them around to which Zidgel then starts freaking out about it.
  • Suspiciously Apropos Music: This episode has a stinger of the penguins performing at a cafe, illustrating a song about space trucker Big Midge, who's in a race with another, cheating trucker by the name of Scaly Slim. He sees several people in trouble of various kinds, but doesn't stop because he's in a hurry. At one point he turns on the radio, which is playing a song about helping others that gets more pertinent to his situation with every chorus.
