When Rosie is painted red she is challenged to a race by fellow red engine James. A screeching sound leads Rosie to suggest that James should get his brakes checked, but he is too proud to do that, which leads to trouble.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Artistic License – Engineering: The main catalyst for James’ crash is him running out of brake fluid. Real trains do not use brake fluid.
  • Bittersweet Ending: After James crashes into Tidmouth Sheds, he gets reprimanded by the Fat Controller for what his constant showing off has led to, and is understandably quite embarrassed and ashamed about it all. However, after he apologises to Rosie for not listening to her earlier, Rosie cheers him up by saying he proved that (for a while, at least) he really was the fastest red engine on Sodor.
  • Flashback Cut: This occurs when Thomas reminds James of the time he had his wooden breaks on fire:
Thomas: Don't forget the time your wooden break blocks caught on fire!
[Cue to James getting his breaks on fire in The Adventure Begins]
    James: AHHHHH!
    [Flashback ends]
James: [Blushes embarrassedly] Yes. I remembered all of that.
  • Flashback with the Other Darrin: In the UK dub, Rob Rackstraw had taken over as James starting with Journey Beyond Sodor. And so voices James in the Flashback Cut to The Adventure Begins in place of Keith Wickham.
  • Mythology Gag: James crashing into the sheds is what Diesel 40125 did in the The Railway Series story "Old Stuck Up".
  • Repeat Cut: James' runaway ends with him destroying the back of the wall of Tidmouth Sheds; said scene is shown three times from different angles.
  • Skewed Priorities: After ramming through the sheds and suffering massive damage, James is more concerned about his paintwork.
  • Too Fast to Stop: With his brakes out of fluid, James becomes a runaway engine. Only stopping when he crashes into Tidmouth Sheds.
  • Wham Episode: A rare example given the standalone nature of most episodes.
    • Rosie is established as having been repainted red after having been pink for 11 seasons.
    • James has his worst crash ever, destroying much of Tidmouth Sheds, leading to Edward moving out in the following episode.

James can't stop

Having run out of brake fluid, James is unable to stop and is sent on a super fast ride through Sodor, ending with a big crash at Tidmouth Sheds.
