One month after Bryce and Justin were arrested. Bryce is given three months probation and an order to behave.
Intercut with the news of Bryce's 'punishment' are women who have dealt with sexual assault or abuse through the series. Olivia Baker mentions that she has never met a woman who has never dealt with it. Jessica, Courtney, Nina, Clay's mother and even Olivia are all shown. Bryce walks out of court with a smug smile.
Justin is served six months in juvenile detention. When asked if he feels it's unfair, Justin just shrugs as his mother never came to claim him. Jessica is also unsurprised by the verdict. No one can believe that Bryce has walked free but she is happy the case is over and she can try to move on.
At Hannah's funeral, Clay tells the mourners about his feelings for Hannah. He uses a line Skye had told him: "I can love you and I can let you go". This makes him realise that Hannah has finally gone but he will always hold onto compassion and love, just like Hannah used to.
A wake is thrown by Clay at Monet's, the coffee shop they used to hang out in. Clay is given a note by Olivia of Hannah's 'reasons why not'. Clay is mentioned on the list twice but it's shown Hannah could only make it to eleven. Olivia reminds Clay that there are always more reasons to live than die. She also tells him that she's going to move to New York, something Hannah always dreamed of doing.
Justin is moved to tears when the Jensens tell him they want to adopt him into the family. Alex and Jessica start dating again but after a tearful talk, Justin and Jessica share a kiss.
Despite the seemingly hopeful and happy appearances, all isn't as good as it seems. Justin is still secretly using heroin. Bryce is moving to a fancy private school and will still get to see his old friends on the sports field. Chloe also reveals she's going to stay with Bryce...because she's pregnant with his child.
Tyler has arrived back from his disciplinary program with a new attitude change. He tells the new school counsellor that he knows he can't change how people behave, only how he reacts to it. However, things change for him suddenly. Monty is seeking revenge against Tyler, who after his vandalising of the fields, caused all baseball to be cancelled that season. When Bryce argues with Monty and tells him to leave, Monty snaps having seemingly lost his sports passion and friendship. He looks for the perfect punching bag. Tyler.
Monty and a group of friends corner Tyler in a school bathroom. Monty brutally beats Tyler, smashing him into a mirror and a sink before pushing his head into a toilet bowl and flushing multiple times. He gets his friends to drag him into the cubicle before sodomising him with a broom handle left from the janitor.
During Spring Fling, everyone appears to be healing and trying to have a peaceful evening. Hannah and Clay's song begins playing and he sobs into Jessica's arms as the group rally around him. Clay learns that Tyler is planning to arrive at the school with guns. He warns everyone to lock the doors but don't call the police. He goes outside and sees Tyler about to head in. He puts himself in the way, pleading with him not to mess up his life by shooting up the school. He reminds him that if he does it, it'll be another sad story that people will forget about in a week.
Tyler hands Clay the biggest gun in the arsenal, just as Tony turns up and demands Tyler to get in the car. Clay is then left holding the gun as police sirens draw closer.
