Recap / The Wonder Years S 04 E 19 The Yearbook

Go To

After Kevin saves a popular couple who are involved with the school yearbook from getting in trouble at school, they let Kevin be involved with planning the yearbook, wanting him to pick funny quotes to go with each student's picture.

Nervous about picking funny enough quotes, he picks "let's eat!" for Peter Armbruser, who everyone calls "Pig" (because he is overweight and seems to have a big appetite), but eventually feels guilty and wants it changed, but ends up picking a more offensive "oink oink". Kevin tries again to have it changed but the couple say it's too late, but then Kevin points out that when Mr. DiPerna sees it they'll get in trouble, to which they act like they'll change it.

Mr. DiPerna calls Kevin to his office. Kevin thinks he's being honored for fixing his mistake, but it turns out that the couple told him that Kevin tried to sneak it into the yearbook and as a result gets detention, and then the couple decides that they don't need Kevin anymore. In the end, Kevin learns about empathy when he learns Peter has been bullied all his life because of his weight to the point that he's used to it, and efforts to control and lose weight have not worked, but he's still actually a nice guy at heart

This episode contains examples of

  • Big Eater: Peter ... which Kevin tries to tie to a quote he submits for his caption.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Mr. DiPerna's reaction to the "Oink, Oink" quote for Peter.
  • Karma Houdini: When the popular couple don't want to change Peter's quote, Kevin points out that the principal will see it, and they decide to make it look like Kevin was entirely responsible. Kevin never tells Mr. DiPerna that they were in support of the quote, and they decide to no longer let Kevin be part of the yearbook. (Although it could be argued – as DiPerna points out – that the popular couple already had good judgment and knew that putting in an offensive quote would not be a good idea.)
  • Nightmare Fuel: Kevin's nightmare, where he's a middle aged man, attending the funeral of Peter. His grave has "Oink, Oink" engraved into it, much to Kevin's dismay. Then a fat arm emerges from the ground, and grabs Kevin, and starts to pull him underground.
  • Tearjerker: When Peter tells Kevin that he's used to being bullied and resigned to being overweight and will probably always have to deal with this.
