Overlong plot summary replaced with concise version, as per mod decision.

Jay is strolling through Homicide, humming "[[ChristmasSongs Jingle Bell Rock]]", until he sees Winona adding red names to the board, at which point his mood darkens. Upon finding out from Norris all the names are [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn all murder victims Lester found in the vacant row houses]], Jay curses out Lester, and asks Norris what he's working on. Norris says he's got a victim of [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn a hot shot, and the murderer has turned himself in]]. Jay is happy that Norris at least has "manufactured" a murder with a suspect attached, and says he'll join Norris to get the suspect's confession...

...which Bubbles tearfully gives to Norris in an interrogation room as Jay enters. Bubbles says they should lock him up and throw away the key, but Norris is more interested in knowing where Bubbles got the cyanide from, and Jay, recognizing Bubbles has the shakes, wants to know when he last had his "medicine". Bubbles claims he's clean, but when Norris asks again about the cyanide, [[VomitIndiscretionShot Bubbles vomits all over the table, getting both Jay and Norris in the process]]. Bubbles apologizes as the two detectives get upset over what's happened to their clothes.

Outside the interrogation room, Norris says he'll read Bubbles his rights when he's calmed down, and Jay goes off to the bathroom to clean himself off. When Jay returns, with his shirt wet but no longer dirty, Norris is trying to get a soda from the vending machine for Bubbles to settle his stomach, but he's unable to. They head back into the interrogation room, only to discover Bubbles has tried to hang himself from the ceiling. [[InterruptedSuicide Jay and Norris manage to cut him down just in time and revive him]]. While Norris goes to get an ambulance, Jay stays with Bubbles.

Kima and Lester are at one of the vacant row houses, supervising the removal of bodies. Dozerman and Sydnor join them, and Sydnor gives Lester a nail that matches Snoop's nail gun, which Lester says means they now have nine houses full of bodies. Kima asks how far Marlo might have gone to plan bodies, and Lester, on his cell phone, says there's only one way to find out...

...and he calls Daniels, who's at a school gymnasium with Burrell, Rawls, and Rhonda. As Daniels takes the call, Rawls asks Rhonda what the story is on forensics; Rhonda says from what she knows, there's a team at every house where a body is found, though she cautions there'll be a lot of evidence to sift through. Daniels comes back, and Rawls asks if the bodies are all victims of one drug crew. Daniels says he thinks so, and Burrell promises him whatever he needs; Daniels says he needs more people from patrol to go through all the vacant row houses, and Burrell looks at Rawls, who nods his approval. Once Daniels leaves, Burrell chides Rawls for trying to make a move on him, and leaves. As Daniels gets back on the phone with Lester...

...Lester orders people around at the crime scene, and asks Sydnor to go to police districts to tell the commanders what to look for, Dozerman to go to hardware stores to find the make and model of Snoop's nail gun, and Kima to go see Herc.

Back at Homicide, Jay, after getting off the phone, asks Norris how Bubbles is doing, and Norris says he's all right, considering. When Jay sees Crutchfield going out to work one of the murder victims Lester uncovered, Jay curses Lester yet again, and goes into the interrogation room, where an EMT is working on Bubbles. She tells Jay Bubbles is now on Ativan for his withdrawal symptoms, and Bubbles shakes his head when Jay asks if he wants to go to the hospital. When the paramedic leaves, Jay asks again why he came to confess, and Bubbles confesses he was [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn trying to kill the Fiend]], but Sherrod took it instead by mistake.

->'''Bubbles:''' He was dipping. I knew he was. I just didn't...[[LikeASonToMe I didn't think the child had no one for him. No mother, no family. He in the street like I'm in the street.]] I tried to, um, like I ain't who I am, right? [[TearJerker Like I'm pretending I ain't been a dope fiend my whole damn life. Just lock me up, man. 'Cause I killed that child.]]

Sighing, Jay leaves the interrogation room and goes to Norris' desk. He tells Norris what Bubbles said, and tells him, "[[PetTheDog Throw this one back.]]" Norris points out releasing Bubbles means he'll try to kill himself again, so Jay suggests sending him to the mental ward at Bayview Hospital; "Something with soft walls".

Proposition Joe is meeting with the co-op in a public park, and naturally, the rest of them are angry about [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn Omar robbing the entire package]], and specifically about having to pay twice for it. Proposition Joe points out he's in the same predicament as everyone else, and when he gets asked about security, points out his security was good enough for them the previous times. The others aren't convinced, and tell Proposition Joe they took a quorum and voted he had to pay for the mess. Proposition Joe says he'll do so, but the price everyone else pays is he's no longer willing to share the good product with anyone else. The others look uncomfortable at that, and Proposition Joe correctly guesses they'll rethink having him pay. Everyone leaves except Proposition Joe, Marlo and Chris. Marlo asks who was in charge of security, and Proposition Joe admits it was Cheese, but he isn't willing to give him up; what he will do is set up a meeting between Marlo and his supplier.

In an abandoned field, Omar, Kimmy, Butchie, Renaldo, and his friends gather together to congratulate themselves, take their respective cuts, and say goodbye (Kimmy hugs Omar, and when Omar cautions her not to sell the drugs she got all at once, tells him she knows, and she's retired now). Omar tells Butchie they stole so much (about "twenty-six raw"), he'll have to spend the rest of his life to sell it off, and he isn't exactly a dealer. Butchie says it might be funny to try and sell it all back to Proposition Joe and the co-op for 20 cents on the dollar; Omar laughs at that as well, but then looks at Renaldo, and [[CrazyEnoughToWork they both realize that's not a bad idea]].

As Randy sits at the bench in the western, [[ChekhovsGun trying to fit money inside the binder of his book]], Carver is on the phone, complaining that he knows there's a waiting list, but Randy's already been in a foster home and needs to move to the top of the list. Mello comes in on this, and asks Carver why Randy isn't with the Department of Social Services. Carver says he's on the phone with them right now, and they want to put him in a group home. Mello says Carver has no choice, that he either has to find a guardian or go to social services, and leaves.

Kima goes to Herc's house. Herc says he's on suspension, but Kima says they need him for some real "police work".

After a {{Montage}} of Mello and other watch commanders telling their troops about the nails they need to be looking for, and how to handle the crime scenes at the vacant row houses, we see Herc with Bunk, Kima and Lester back [[Recap/TheWireS04E08CornerBoys where he pulled Chris and Snoop over]]. Kima eventually spies a spot on the street with a hole on it, and Herc admits it might be the spot where he fired the nail gun, though the nail is long gone. Herc is [[ItsAllAboutMe more worried about his upcoming trial board]], and Bunk says the brass is going to throw the book at him.

In the hospital, Dennis tries to buzz for the nurse, and one comes in, but she's dismissive of his request for better TV service, pointing out the patient next to him with that better service has it because of his insurance. She then tells Dennis he's getting discharged as soon as they can (the only reason he was taken in the first place was [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn the fractured leg resulting from his gunshot wound]]), and says "gangsters" are all alike in how they act in the ER. Dennis is amused by this, but the nurse points out she pulled his file, and he's done this before. Before Dennis can respond, Colvin shows up. Dennis asks if he's a cop (the nurse excuses herself at this), and Colvin admits he used to be, but is now a teacher. He tells Dennis Carver referred him, and says he's there about Namond.

A crowd has gathered around one of the vacant row houses, including Bodie and Poot. Poot tells Bodie he hears this is where Little Kevin was buried, which gets Bodie ranting once he sees Little Kevin's body being brought out:

->'''Bodie:''' [[ForTheEvulz This motherfucker just be killing niggers just to do it. See? Nigger killing motherfuckers just 'cause he can.]] [[TheStoolPigeon Not 'cause they snitching]], [[NothingPersonal not 'cause it's business]], but 'cause this shit just comes natural to him.
->'''Poot:''' Yo, Bodie, man-
->'''Bodie:''' (''getting louder'') Little Kevin is gone. [[LackOfEmpathy This nigger don't feel nothing.]] And all them motherfuckers in them row houses, nobody mean a fucking thing to him!
->'''Poot:''' I think you need to calm the fuck down.
->'''Bodie:''' (''yelling louder'') Fuck Marlo, man! Fuck him! And anybody that think it's all right to do people this way! You hear me?

[=McNulty=], who's at the scene, whispers to another uniformed cop, "That's his friend in there." Poot again tries to calm Bodie down, but Bodie is beyond control at this point, and starts beating on a police car and kicking in the windows. As other policemen move in to subdue Bodie, Poot looks sad, and [=McNulty=] looks thoughtful.

Carcetti is in his office, watching the news with Norman and Steintorf about Marlo's murder victims being uncovered. Steintorf says the story will knock the school deficit off the front page, and Norman says Royce will get blamed for the murder victims, so Carcetti can see that as good news. Carcetti wants Royce to get the blame for the deficit as well, but Steintorf points out it's a problem that will continue to play out, and Carcetti will get the blame eventually. They once again debate whether or not to take the money from the governor; Norman is for, Steintorf against.

Dukie walks by Randy's house, which is burned beyond recognition.

Proposition Joe is at his store with Cheese and Slim. Cheese says it's risky to put Marlo in contact with the supplier, but Proposition Joe points out he's got no choice. Slim adds Marlo might go around the rest of the co-op once he knows where the supply is from, but [[TemptingFate Proposition Joe assures him the "Greeks" won't do that to him]]. They're interrupted by a knock on the door; it's Omar, and Proposition Joe tells a reluctant Slim to let him in. Cheese immediately threatens Omar, and Omar responds, "So you don't want your shipment, then?" Omar tells Proposition Joe he's willing to sell it back for 20 cents on the dollar, and while Proposition Joe realizes he'll be out four hundred grand, he reluctantly agrees. Omar then asks for [[Recap/TheWireS04E11ANewDay his clock back]], and Proposition Joe gives it to him. Omar pays for the clock, thanks them and says he'll be in touch.

Carcetti is at home with Jen, going over his options, and giving both Norman and Steintorf's opinions. Jen says she knows Carcetti will do the right thing, but Carcetti doesn't look too sure.

Dukie goes into a townhouse. As he walks up the stairs, he hears and sees Michael in bed with a girl. Dukie turns away and goes into another bedroom, where Bug is sleeping in the top of a bunk bed. Dukie puts the blanket over him, and then sits on the bottom bed.

Rhonda is questioning Crutchfield inside the gym about where the bodies he found were when [=McNulty=] comes in. He asks how many bodies there are so far (17 and counting), and assures Rhonda she'll do fine even though it's her first "red ball" as long as she doesn't let the police "see her sweat". He asks her to drop the charge on Bodie, and then turns to Lester, asking detailed questions about what they've found, and whether they've really worked the scenes (which Lester and Rhonda both say they have). Bunk (who's joined them) and Lester then both go to work on [=McNulty=], saying a "real police" would want to get back in the game on this one. [=McNulty=] looks thoughtful.

Dukie tries walking to the high school, but gets enough of a brush off from other kids that he turns around and walks away. Back at Tilghman, we see Prez and then Duquette watching over their respective students as they take the state test. In Prez's class, some kids work while most seem to ignore it, and in Duquette's, it's the same, though Darnell, Namond and Zenobia are among the ones who are doing the work.

Back at the gym, Daniels is holding a meeting with Bunk, Kima, Lester and Rhonda. Bunk confirms the nail gun, while high in price, is commonly used by contractors, and Herc thinks it's the one he saw. Bunk and Kima then tell Daniels about going to the traffic stop earlier. Daniels wants a search warrant on Chris' truck, plus a court order for his blood and Snoop's, but Rhonda says they don't have enough probable cause. Bunk brings up Randy, but Lester insists he's a source, not a witness. Bunk angrily says he'll be back in an hour, and takes off with Kima in tow.

Colvin visits Dennis again at the hospital, and Dennis confirms he was able to set up the meeting, though he instructs Colvin to tell Carver that Carver owes him. Out in the hallway, the nurse asks Colvin if he has a warrant for Dennis, and Colvin tells her Dennis' job and [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn why he got shot]]. She looks chastened as Colvin walks away.

Bunk and Kima are at [[Recap/TheWireS04E02SoftEyes Lex's mother's house]], and Bunk tells Lex's mother she'll feel guilty if she doesn't say anything. Lex haltingly tells Bunk there was so little of Lex's body when he was found that she couldn't see him at the funeral home, and finally admits she heard Chris and Snoop (whom she misidentifies as "Loop") killed Lex.

Carver is visiting a social worker, asking for some way to put Randy on top of the waiting list, but the social worker says rules are rules, and asks Carver not to raise his voice. Carver then asks if he can adopt Randy, but she points out the process takes a few months, and Randy needs to come under the department's care.

Bunk, Kima and Lester have pulled over Chris and Snoop, who are sitting on the curb. Kima is unable to find anything involving tools, and the car is even registered in someone else's name. However, while searching the glove compartment, she notices some extra wires. She pulls them apart, and [[Recap/TheWireS04E08CornerBoys the compartment holding Chris' gun]] pops open. Kima shows it to Lester, who nods, and they cuff Chris and Snoop.

At the same bench the co-op met at earlier, Marlo is now with Spiros, who says he's only there because of Proposition Joe, and says he not only trusts Proposition Joe unhesitatingly, but also his own people. Marlo shakes his hand, and Spiros leaves. Monk comes up to tell Marlo about Chris and Snoop being arrested, and Marlo tells him to call the bondsman and to have someone follow Spiros, assuring Monk Spiros isn't a problem, but that he (Marlo) needs to know more. When Monk leaves, Marlo tells Proposition Joe he's satisfied, and will pay him money in the morning. He'll also wait to deal with Omar once the police have stopped investigating the dead bodies.

Bodie comes out of jail to find [=McNulty=] waiting for him. Bodie is skeptical, but [=McNulty=] points out he never would have been released if [=McNulty=] hadn't intervened, and he offers to buy Bodie lunch. As the two walk to [=McNulty=]'s squad car, the bail bondsman's van pulls up, and Monk, when he gets out, sees the two of them together.

Inside the jailhouse, Kima and Lester oversee Chris and Snoop giving blood and hair samples.

Bodie and [=McNulty=] are eating lunch at [[UsefulNotes/{{Baltimore}} Cylburn Arboretum]], and Bodie allows it's nice. He then says he isn't a snitch, and [=McNulty=] points out he never said otherwise.

->'''Bodie:''' [[SeenItAll I been doing this a long time. I ain't never said nothing to no cop. I feel old. I been out there since I was 13. I ain't never fucked up a count, never stole off a package, never did some shit that I wasn't told to do. I've been straight up.]] But what come back? You think if I get jammed up on some shit, they'd be like, "All right, yeah. Bodie been there. Bodie hang tough. We got to his pay lawyer. We got a bail." [[{{Hypocrite}} They want me to stand with them, right? Where the fuck they at when they supposed to be standing by us? I mean, when shit goes bad and there's hell to pay, where they at?]] This game is rigged, man.

Bodie goes on to add that while he won't put any of Avon's crew that's left in jail, he knows Marlo needs to be stopped, and he's willing to step up. [=McNulty=] says, "You're a soldier, Bodie."

In the visitor's room at prison, Colvin is waiting when Wee-Bey comes in. He recognizes Colvin from when Colvin walked a beat, and the two of them share a chuckle about the old days before getting down to business. Colvin asks if Dennis told Wee-Bey he was no longer a cop, and Wee-Bey affirms Colvin wouldn't be there without Dennis' say-so. Colvin says he's gotten to know, and really like, Namond, and Namond could do a lot of things that Wee-Bey and even Colvin couldn't if he was given a chance, but none of that would happen if Namond went on the corner, especially since "the game" has changed so much. Wee-Bey, thinking on this, points out that's the nature of "the game", but Colvin is just getting warmed up:

->'''Colvin:''' I'm talking about Namond here, Mr. Brice. He's a lot of things, a lot of good things. I mean, before you know, he might surprise all of us given half a chance, but he ain't made for them corners, man. I mean, not like we were. That's why I come down here - because I gotta believe that you see it. Being who you are and all you've been through. You know your son. It's in your hands, man.
->'''Wee-Bey:''' (''sharply'') You asking too much.
->'''Colvin:''' [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming Yeah, but I'm asking.]]

In the courtyard, Monk tells Marlo about seeing Bodie with [=McNulty=]. Once Monk leaves, Marlo tells Chris they can't afford a snitch, and suggest putting Michael on the job. Chris, however, points out [[Recap/TheWireS04E03HomeRooms Michael knows Bodie]], and maybe it'd be better if Michael's first kill was someone he didn't know]], and Marlo nods. He then tells Chris about Omar selling the drugs that he stole back to Proposition Joe.

Namond is sitting in class with Duquette and Parenti when Colvin comes in. Namond says he thought Colvin forgot about him, and Colvin asks him to wait outside. Once Namond is gone, Duquette asks how it went, and Colvin sighs and says he thinks Namond will rejoin his mother. Parenti then tells him they have a meeting with Carcetti that day as well.

Bodie, Poot and Spider on on their corner that night, lamenting at how bad business is, when Bodie notices figures creeping towards them. Spider immediately takes off, and Poot urges Bodie to take off as well, but Bodie yells, "[[DefiantToTheEnd Yo, this my corner. I ain't running nowhere!]]" Bodie continues to plead with him, but Bodie won't run, and [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere Poot finally takes off]] as Bodie starts shooting at Chris and Snoop, yelling how they aren't going to put him in the row houses either. Unfortunately for Bodie, he doesn't see O-Dog, who steps up from a doorway Poot ran past, and [[BoomHeadshot shoots Bodie in the back of the head]]. As Bodie goes down, O-Dog shoots him one more time to be sure, as Chris and Snoop look on appreciatively.

At the western office, Carver gets up from his desk, walks over to where Randy is sleeping on the bench, spreads his coat over him, and takes the comic book that he was reading away.

Colvin and Parenti are waiting outside the mayor's office, and Colvin is getting antsy. He finally goes to the desk of Carcetti's assistant (accidentally knocking over some of the things she has on it), and says he's willing to sit outside while Parenti meets with the mayor. The assistant tells him Carcetti is in Annapolis, which makes Colvin upset.

Michael is sleeping in his apartment when he hears a knock on the door. He gets out of bed to answer it, and sees Chris, Marlo and Snoop there. As they go in, Marlo good-naturedly chides Michael for sleeping late, and then asks how he likes the apartment. Michael thanks him and says it's fine; as he changes shirts, Marlo notices [[Recap/TheWireS04E11ANewDay the ring Michael took from Walker]] hanging on a necklace, and asks where he got it. Michael says he took it from someone, and offers it to Marlo, but [[PetTheDog Marlo says he can keep it]]. Dukie and Bug come down the stairs, and after looking at what's going on, Dukie says he'll get Bug ready for school. As they go into another room, Marlo tells Michael he's got Bodie's old corner, which Michael is ready for, and alludes to "this other thing". Snoop asks who it was [[Recap/TheWireS04E10Misgivings she and Chris killed for Michael]]; Michael nods towards Bug and says, "Bug's daddy," which surprises her.

Carcetti and Norman are back at the governor's, and once again, told to wait at the bench.

At the western, Carver is correcting Colicchio's paperwork when [=McNulty=] comes in. Carver tells him about Bodie, but is interrupted by Mello yelling for him. [=McNulty=] goes to get the file, looks at it, and angrily throws it across the room. Meanwhile, Mello is chewing out Carver, telling him Randy needs to go to social services immediately if not sooner, or Carver will get busted for insubordination. As Mello storms off, Randy mentions he has $235 saved if it'll help get him on a list. Carver has no answer.

Colvin and Parenti are meeting with Gerry and Steintorf, and the latter calls their program "tracking, plain and simple". Parenti objects, and Steintorf says parents will complain their kids are being segregated. Colvin tries to point out again the program is for the benefit of both those students and the teachers in general, and Parenti adds with grant money and the mayor's support, they can expand the program. Steintorf brings up the statewide test, pointing out how the kids would be left behind on that, and Colvin, knowing [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption he's fighting a losing battle]], nevertheless says again the kids are already being left behind, and no one wants to admit it. Steintorf curtly ends the meeting. Outside, Colvin says he never should have come in the first place, but Parenti says it's all just a process, and win or lose, they've made progress, and set up a model for study. Colvin laughs bitterly at this, and as they head into the elevator, says, "When do this shit get changed?"

[=De'Londa=] is visiting Wee-Bey in prison, and tells him Namond needs "to get hard". Wee-Bey disagrees, and says, "If he out, then he out." [=De'Londa=] gets angry at this, and says no one is taking Namond away from her.

->'''Wee-Bey:''' [[ImpliedDeathThreat Remember who the fuck you talking to right here. Remember who I am. My word is still my word. In here, in Baltimore, in any place you can think of calling home, it'll be my word that finds you.]] (''{{Beat}}'') Man come down here to say my son can be anything he damn please.
->'''[=De'Londa=]:''' (''bitterly'') Except a soldier.
->'''Wee-Bey:''' [[EvilParentsWantGoodKids Yeah. Well, look at me up in here. Who the fuck would want to be that if they could be anything else, [=De'Londa=]?]]

[=De'Londa=], less forceful now, asks if he's going to let go of her as well. After a long pause, Wee-Bey says he won't, but insists she's going to let Namond go.

Omar knocks on the door of a garage, and Renaldo lets him in. They join Butchie and a couple of Renaldo's friends, and Omar gives Butchie several stacks of money; "I be my own bank now." Butchie asks if anyone followed Omar, but Omar says no, and that Proposition Joe recognized he had no choice. Outside the garage, as Renaldo closes things up, Omar calls Proposition Joe and lets him know where the drugs are. He and Renaldo then hug Butchie goodbye, and the two of them drive off.

Steintorf and some other staffers are in the cabinet meeting room when Carcetti and Norman come in, and Carcetti storms into his office without saying a word. Norman leaves, and Steintorf, after looking at the others, goes into Carcetti's office, where Carcetti is holding his head in his hands. Steintorf correctly guesses Carcetti didn't take the money - Carcetti says the governor not only wanted to make him beg for it, but wanted to call a press conference - and tells Carcetti he did the right thing, but Carcetti doesn't look so sure.

Poot and a few others are on their corner when [=McNulty=] pulls up, tells everyone the corner is indicted, and orders away everyone except Poot, whom he frisks. In a low voice, he says he's there to get justice for Bodie, and asks who killed him. Poot retorts, "Y'all did," and points out Bodie was killed because he was seen talking to the police, so unless [=McNulty=] wants Poot to end up the same way, he should either arrest Poot or let him go. [=McNulty=] lets Poot go, and looks guilty.

Prez is heading inside the school when he sees Dukie waiting for him, and they greet each other. Prez asks why he isn't at school, and why he doesn't have his backpack; [[BlatantLies Dukie says he's on his way, and is going to pick up his books on the way.]] [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming He hands Prez a gift bag, and says it's a present for all Prez has done for him.]] Prez pulls out the present, and sees it's a pen set. Prez thanks Dukie, and tells him to come by and visit anytime.

Duquette tells the kids they have to go back to, as Albert puts it, "gen pop". None of them are excited to go back, though when Colvin asks Namond what he thinks, Namond quietly says it might just be time.

[=McNulty=] and Beadie are in bed together. Beadie asks what he's still doing up, and [=McNulty=] confesses he can't stop thinking about what happened to Bodie, and the rest of the case Lester's developing is also getting under his skin. He also says he thinks thanks to Beadie, he can go back to that kind of work without being so angry like he was before. They start fooling around.

Carver pulls in front of the group home, and he and Randy get out of the car. As both of them look at the building, neither of them willing to go in right away, Randy tells Carver, "It's okay." Carver gives him a sharp look, and Randy says, "[[TearJerker You tried. You don't need to feel bad.]]" Carver has no answer, and they go in. A social worker greets Randy at the door, and brings him in as Carver follows. The other kids glare at Randy as he makes his way up to the room. Carver waits till Randy gets up to his room, and then leaves. Randy puts his stuff on the top bunk of a bed, and tries not to keep his back turned. Outside, Carver goes over to his car, gets in, and [[HeroicBSOD starts pounding on the steering wheel]].

[=McNulty=] is in Daniels' office, and a skeptical Daniels asks if he really wants in; "I'm not asking 'cause I can't use you.
I'm asking for your sake." [=McNulty=] says [[TemptingFate he thinks he can handle himself this time]]. They shake hands and agree to work the case the way it needs to be worked.

In the doorway of his classroom, Prez asks Grace about the scores (38% proficient, 8$ advanced), wondering how they could be so high. Grace points out how [[LiesDamnedLiesAndStatistics deceptive the numbers are, and that "proficient" means two grades below level, while "advanced" means the same level or one below]]. Prez sighs and says he's still learning, but Grace assures him he's doing fine. The students file into Prez's class, including Albert, Namond and Zenobia, all of whom Prez welcomes back. Albert makes a crack about them being Prez's worst nightmare, but the other kids roll their eyes, and Albert quickly apologizes, which Prez accepts. They get down to math problems.

In the gymnasium, Daniels is with Lester and Rhonda, and Lester says they're up to 22 bodies now. Daniels gives Lester the bad news; the guns in Chris' truck don't match any of the murders, and have been wiped clean of prints. Lester says they'll just have to go proactive, and they're in it for the long haul. Changing subjects, Lester asks Daniels how he happened to pick this particular school as headquarters. Daniels says he knew the school had closed down a few years earlier, and happened to be close to many of the crime scenes. He further adds, "I went to school here back in the day. Got a decent education now that I think on it."

Kima, with Walon in tow, parks outside a hospital. Walon asks if Kima tried to talk to Bubbles, and Kima says she didn't know what to say, and only heard the bad news earlier in the morning. Walon wonders if the suicide attempt was real, and Kima says knowing Bubbles, it probably was. Walon guesses it was shame he was feeling, and admits he himself hadn't talked to Bubbles in a couple of years, but he must be clean to be in D ward. They finally go in. An orderly leads them to a wing where Bubbles is sitting. Walon asks if Kima wants to join him, and Kima, uncomfortable, tells him she'll wait. Walon goes in and slowly makes his way towards Bubbles. When Bubbles sees Walon, [[TearJerker he starts crying and trying to ward Walon off, but Walon isn't deterred and hugs Bubbles anyway]]. Kima, even more uncomfortable watching, takes off.

Norman is in a bar with Parker, and they're both drinking and watching TV. Norman is still upset Carcetti didn't take the money, but Parker tells him, "They always disappoint." He adds that he'll work for Royce if Royce makes a Congressional run; otherwise, he'll take on a young hopeful who's after the first district seat. Norman looks thoughtful.

A crew is on a corner until Michael rolls up, and [[BoomHeadshot shoots one of them in the head]]. After the rest scatter, Michael gets into a truck, and Chris tells Michael he can look anyone in the eye, no matter what they've done. As Michael ponders this, we go into the MontageOut (done to Paul Weller's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", where we see: (1) Namond saying goodbye to Wee-Bey in prison, as Colvin looks on, (2) [=McNulty=] greeting Kima, Lester and Sydnor in the detail office, and looking at Marlo's picture, (3) Herc at his disciplinary hearing, (4) Proposition Joe and Spiros at a diner, being watched by Marlo from outside, (5) Parenti making his presentation on the program to his fellow academics, and Colvin, who's been watching, finally deciding he's had enough, and leaving, (6) Bunk in Homicide, showing the evidence from the row houses to Crutchfield and Norris, Jay looking on, and Jay walking past the board, which now has many more names on it, (7) Rhonda joining Carcetti and Daniels for lunch at Carcetti's usual restaurant, while Burrell and Clay look on from another booth, (8) Prez, who's in his car, spotting Dukie on a corner (and Kenard trying to sell him drugs until Prez drives off, at which point Kenard spits on the car), (9) Randy walking in his room, only to discover someone's written "Snitch Bitch" on his bed, [[ChekhovsGun his money's gone from his book]], and there's a group of boys waiting to take him on, though Randy does at least get in the first punch, (10) Dennis, in a splint and on crutches, supervising his fighters while the nurse stands next to him and smiles, (11) Carcetti presiding over another cabinet meeting, with Norman in tow, (12) Carver chasing some young kids away from the loading dock, and coming across some graffiti that reads, "Fayette Street Mafia 4 Ever", with Donut, Dukie, Michael, Namond, and Randy's names (among others) written around it, and (13) Michael helping Bug with his homework at their place. It ends with Michael asleep in the car, until Chris wakes Michael up and says, "The gun". Michael hands the gun to Monk, who puts it into a sewer grate when the car drives up to it, and the car leaves afterwards.

Colvin is on the front porch of his house with Namond when Colvin's wife comes out, reminding Namond it's time for school. Namond and Colvin head inside, but Colvin's wife reminds Namond to get his breakfast plate. As Namond goes back outside, he sees an SUV drive past; sure enough, it's Donut, and the two of them wave at each other until Donut drives past and Namond, after a moment, goes inside.

Jay is strolling through Homicide, humming "[[ChristmasSongs Jingle Bell Rock]]", until he sees Winona adding red names Distraught at Sherrod's death, Bubbles attempts to commit suicide. Carcetti agonizes about whether to take the board, at which point his mood darkens. Upon finding out from Norris all the names are [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn all murder victims Lester found in the vacant row houses]], Jay curses out Lester, and asks Norris what he's working on. Norris says he's got governor's financial offer, fearing it could be used against him if he makes a victim of [[Recap/TheWireS04E12ThatsGotHisOwn a hot shot, and the murderer has turned run for governor himself in]]. ...which Bubbles tearfully gives to Norris
in an interrogation room as Jay enters.

When Jay returns, with his shirt wet but no longer dirty, Norris is trying to get a soda
years. As Cutty recovers from the vending machine for Bubbles to settle his stomach, but he's unable to. [[InterruptedSuicide Jay MCU, and Norris manage begins to cut him down just in time and revive him]].

Kima asks how far Marlo might have gone to plan bodies, and Lester, on
build his cell phone, says there's only one way to find out...

...and he calls Daniels, who's at a school gymnasium with Burrell, Rawls, and Rhonda. As Daniels takes the call, Rawls asks Rhonda what the story is on forensics; Rhonda says from what she knows, there's a team at every house where a body is found, though she cautions there'll be a lot of evidence to sift through. Daniels comes back, and Rawls asks if
investigation into the bodies are all victims of one drug crew. in the vacants. With the case sprawling, Burrell gives Daniels says a free hand to oversee it as he thinks so, and Burrell promises him whatever he needs; Daniels says he needs more people from patrol to go through all the vacant row houses, and Burrell looks at Rawls, who nods his approval.

When Jay
sees Crutchfield going out fit, leading to work one of the murder victims Lester uncovered, Jay curses Lester yet again, and goes into the interrogation room, where an EMT is working on Bubbles.

After a {{Montage}} of Mello and other watch commanders telling their troops about the nails they need to be looking for, and how to handle the crime scenes at the vacant row houses, we see Herc with Bunk, Kima and Lester back [[Recap/TheWireS04E08CornerBoys where he pulled
Freamon bringing Chris and Snoop over]].

In the hospital, Dennis tries to buzz
in for the nurse, and one comes in, but she's dismissive of his request for better TV service, pointing out the patient next to him with that better service has it because of his insurance.

A crowd has gathered around one of the vacant row houses, including
DNA sampling. Bodie and Poot.

->'''Poot:''' Yo, Bodie, man-
->'''Bodie:''' (''getting louder'') Little Kevin is gone.

Carcetti is in his office, watching the news with Norman and Steintorf about
reaches breaking point over Marlo's murder victims being uncovered. Steintorf says of his people, and turns to [=McNulty=] for help. As the story will knock the school deficit off the front page, and Norman says Royce will get blamed for the murder victims, so Carcetti can see that as good news. Carcetti wants Royce to get the blame for the deficit as well, but Steintorf points out it's a problem that will continue to play out, and Carcetti will get the blame eventually. They once again New Day debate whether or not how to take the money from the governor; Norman is for, Steintorf against.

handle Omar's robbery of their shipment, Prop Joe introduces Marlo to Vondas. Meanwhile, Omar tries to sell Joe back his own drugs. Test day arrives in Tilghman Middle School, as Dukie walks by makes a decision about his future. With Randy's house, which is foster-mother badly burned beyond recognition.

Proposition Joe is at his store with Cheese and Slim. Cheese says it's risky to put Marlo in contact with
after the supplier, but Proposition Joe points out he's got no choice.

Colvin visits Dennis again at the hospital, and Dennis confirms he was able to set up the meeting, though he instructs Colvin to tell
arson attack, Carver that Carver owes him.

Carver is visiting a social worker, asking for some way
desperately attempts to put Randy on top of the waiting list, but the social worker says rules are rules, and asks Carver not to raise prevent his voice. Carver then asks if he can adopt Randy, but she points out the process takes a few months, and Randy needs return to come under the department's care.

Monk comes up to tell Marlo about Chris and Snoop being arrested, and Marlo tells him to call the bondsman and to have someone follow Spiros, assuring Monk Spiros isn't
a problem, but that he (Marlo) needs to know more.

->'''[=De'Londa=]:''' (''bitterly'') Except a soldier.

Carver pulls in front of the
group home, as the pilot program has one last chance to save itself, and he and Randy get out of the car.

A crew is on a corner until
Michael rolls up, and [[BoomHeadshot shoots one of them in the head]]. After the rest scatter, Michael gets into a truck, and Chris tells Michael he can look anyone in the eye, no matter what they've done. As Michael ponders this, we go into the MontageOut (done to Paul Weller's "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", where we see: (1) Namond saying goodbye to Wee-Bey in prison, as Colvin looks on, (2) [=McNulty=] greeting Kima, Lester and Sydnor in the detail office, and looking at Marlo's picture, (3) Herc at is given his disciplinary hearing, (4) Proposition Joe and Spiros at a diner, being watched by Marlo from outside, (5) Parenti making his presentation on the program to his fellow academics, and Colvin, who's been watching, finally deciding he's had enough, and leaving, (6) Bunk in Homicide, showing the evidence from the row houses to Crutchfield and Norris, Jay looking on, and Jay walking past the board, which now has many more names on it, (7) Rhonda joining Carcetti and Daniels for lunch at Carcetti's usual restaurant, while Burrell and Clay look on from another booth, (8) Prez, who's in his car, spotting Dukie on a corner (and Kenard trying to sell him drugs until Prez drives off, at which point Kenard spits on the car), (9) Randy walking in his room, only to discover someone's written "Snitch Bitch" on his bed, [[ChekhovsGun his money's gone from his book]], and there's a group of boys waiting to take him on, though Randy does at least get in the first punch, (10) Dennis, in a splint and on crutches, supervising his fighters while the nurse stands next to him and smiles, (11) Carcetti presiding over another cabinet meeting, with Norman in tow, (12) Carver chasing some young kids away from the loading dock, and coming across some graffiti that reads, "Fayette Street Mafia 4 Ever", with Donut, Dukie, Michael, Namond, and Randy's names (among others) written around it, and (13) Michael helping Bug with his homework at their place. It ends with Michael asleep in the car, until Chris wakes Michael up and says, "The gun". Michael hands the gun to Monk, who puts it into a sewer grate when the car drives up to it, and the car leaves afterwards.

Colvin is on the front porch of his house with Namond when Colvin's wife comes out, reminding Namond it's time
assignment for school.

This
Marlo.
