Recap / The Storyteller E 09 The Heartless Giant

Go To

A giant with no heart lays waste to the countryside, but is eventually outsmarted and captured by a king. Years later, the youngest son of this king, Prince Leo, meets the giant and seemingly befriends him... Only for the giant to double-cross the prince and trick him into escaping. After his brothers go missing trying to recapture the giant, Leo must now go and confront the giant himself.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Beyond Redemption: Leo's brothers feel the giant is this, which is why they choose to break his heart rather than return it to him. The Storyteller and the Dog take Leo's side, though the story itself leaves it open whether Leo's brothers were right or if the giant really could have redeemed himself.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Leo finds the giant's heart and is ready to return it to him, but his brothers stop him and break it in front of the giant. The giant falls and dies, leaving Leo horrified and heartbroken. The bright side is everyone who the giant cursed is now back to normal and Leo is able to overcome his sorrow, growing up into a wise and benevolent ruler who has many children.
  • Pet the Dog: The giant is sincerely grateful to Leo for freeing him, he even tries to comfort the prince for his guilt over what happened. Then when Leo becomes his servant, the giant treats him fairly and the worst he does is sometimes snark at him. The giant himself dryly lampshades this.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The giant was cruel to all and broke Leo's heart, in the end he is killed by the people he abused by having his heart broken in front of him after it had been retrieved by Leo.
