Recap / The Smurfs S 9 E 38 Hearts N Smurfs

Go To

The Smurfs land in the Netherlands to discover a younger Cupid (William Callaway) who has a broken wing thanks to Van Garg and Hans (descendants of Gargamel and Azrael). Brainy, Hefty and Clumsy are trained to substitute for Cupid while it takes long for his wing to heal. Later, Hefty accidentally shoots a love arrow at Hans (being hit by Brainy landing on him). The cat changes to good and starts loving on Van Garg. Brainy is caught in the act and is cursed to spread hate instead of love, thus affecting all the other Smurfs and Cupid. They chase after Hefty, encouraging Van Garg to join in the fun. Fortunately, Hefty's last love arrow is shot in the sky and rains love all over the Netherlands. Van Garg finally becomes good in the process and no longer evil. As he and Hans dance off into the sunset, Brainy, Hefty and Clumsy revert to their normal outfits. The Smurfs drift off into the next time period, with Cupid spreading love in their journey (thus concluding the series with a cliffhanger).

The episode provides examples of:

  • The Cameo: Smurfette and Greedy Smurf make non-speaking cameos in this episode.
  • Getting the Boot: Brainy Smurf gets flung towards the outside of Van Garg's house, after his attempt at trying to turn two bunnies into lovebirds with his long-winded speeches.
  • Hate Plague: One that turns Smurfs-turned-cherubs into evil versions of themselves, including Cupid.
  • No Ending: The Smurfs leave to another time period, with no set conclusion for the time travel saga.
  • The Power of Love: Hans (descendant of Azrael) and eventually Van Garg (descendant of Gargamel) have been successfully turned over to the side of good, thanks to a love arrow and a rain full of love.
