Return to Recap: The Smurfs (1981).

The Smurflings want to play with the adult Smurfs, but the adults cannot play because they are so busy. The Smurflings suggest that the adult Smurfs should have a day off, and Papa Smurf agrees. He suggests to the Smurfs that some of them should give their day off to the Smurflings. Brainy Smurf misunderstands this and organizes a committee of seven Smurfs: Farmer, Greedy, Handy, Miner, Painter, Smurfette, and Tailor, to spend their "day off" working for the Smurflings. The seven Smurfs do this, but end up contracting a condition of overwork that causes them to first lose their tails ("work their tails off") and then transform into work-obsessed living versions of the tools they use in their work. When Brainy and the Smurflings find out about this, they discover that the only cure for the Smurfs' condition is to get their minds off work. They take the transformed Smurfs to the beach to get their minds off work. While at the beach, the Smurflings get captured by sea creatures called "water harpies". Brainy, Papa Smurf, and the transformed Smurfs rescue the Smurflings, and the transformed Smurfs concern for their younger counterparts causes them to turn back into Smurfs and regain their tails.

This episode contains the following examples:

  • Object Shifting: Farmer, Greedy, Handy, Miner, Painter, Smurfette, and Tailor turn into a hoe, an egg beater, a hammer, a pickaxe, a paintbrush, a watering can, and a pair of scissors respectively.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Brainy Smurf mistakes The Smurflings' idea of a day off from working as spending a "day off" working.
