Chapter 23: A Blessing or a Curse?

Uodeela teaches her pupils how to use curses: an attack on Tadpole Pond leads to a problem.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Captain Bufo appears earlier than in canon, which would be in the first half of Season 2.
  • Attack! Attack... Retreat! Retreat!: Captain Bufo leads an attack on Tadpole Pond to collect their taxes. When Uodeela defeats him in combat, he orders his troops to take her on until she transforms into the Red Heron, causing him to yell for a retreat.
  • Combat Tentacles: Like with witch magic, the standard use of plant magic in Amphibia is the ability to control vines and use them in a fight.
  • Green Thumb: Uodeela demonstrates her ability to use plant magic by summoning vines.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: To bring Uodeela back from her heron form after losing control, the kids talk to her by stating how much she's done for them and asking her to return, which works.
  • Long-Lived: Uodeela and Amara mention that both salamanders and newts have long lifespans.
  • Luminescent Blush: Amara gets one after Uodeela mentions how much she's grown.
  • Monster of the Week: Bufo and his troops.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Salamanders were the original keepers of magic who taught the other Amphibians in using the art. According to many sources, they slowly disappeared.
    • Tadpole Pond rests smack dab on the border of Amphibia's Southern and Eastern regions.
  • Wham Episode: Uodeela discovers that she's starting to lose control of herself in her heron form and has to consider giving up her last curse potion to prevent getting stuck in that form again.
