Ian prepares for his interdimensional journey.

The Control Voice: The mind of man has always longed to know what lies beyond the world we live in. Explorers have ventured into the deeps and the heights. Of these explorers some are scientists, some are mystics. Each is driven by a different purpose. The one thing they share in common is a wish to cross the Borderlands that lie beyond the Outer Limits.

A group of scientists discover a way to enter the fourth dimension, where a millionaire expects to find his dead son.

The Control Voice: There are worlds beyond and worlds within which the explorer must explore, but there is one power which seems to transcend space and time, life and death. It is a deeply human power which holds us safe and together when all other forces combine to tear us apart — we call it the power of love.

The Troperland:

  • Spanner in the Works: Mrs. Palmer's assistant mentions this as his literal plan, which is to drop such an object into a large electrical generator to sabotage the project.
  • The Power of Love: Explicitly invoked in the closing narration.
  • Tim Taylor Technology: Eva rescues Ian by blacking out the entire city, which gives the energy platform enough power to allow him to be brought back.
  • Title Drop: This is one of two episodes to use the phrase "The Outer Limits" in the Control Voice narration ("The Premonition" is the other).
  • X-Ray Sparks: When Hartley jumps into the interdimensional field, this briefly happens to him before he's obliterated.
