Robert California forces the office to prepare a welcome party for Nellie, but the party planners seek to sabotage it. Meanwhile, Erin helps Andy break up with his current girlfriend Jessica.

- The Friend Nobody Likes: Nellie is this to the entire office, who still resents her presence and the fact that she's trying to co-opt the manager job. However, when Pam tries to change course with the prank party and make it a normal party, they decide to vent their feelings towards Pam instead, and the party becomes about how much they hate Pam.
- Hidden Depths: Nellie, who up to this point, just seemed like an arrogant Cloudcuckoolander, is revealed to have a lot of hidden tragedies to her, such as a very messy breakup with her ex-boyfriend that led to her selling off her flat.
- Official Couple: Erin finally allows Andy to kiss her when he makes his feelings clear to Jessica instead of lying about being gay.
- Oh, Crap!: Jim, after discovering Nellie's trauma over her breakup is the reason she hates magicians... meaning the magician he just told Pam to hire will now look very distasteful.
- Pet the Dog: Jim and Dwight become a lot kinder to Nellie after learning about her past relationship troubles, and Jim desperately convinces Pam to not throw Nellie a purposefully bad party.
- That Came Out Wrong: Nellie's attempts at curbing her racial comments towards the Irish and Hispanics, which leads to her responding to Stanley's curtness with "I would appreciate it if you would keep that stuff on the basketball court." When everyone groans at that, she replies with "If you’d let me finish... or the squash court... or the Supreme Court."
