Recap / The Office USS 7 E 3 Andys Play

Go To

Andy invites the office to see him perform in a production of Sweeney Todd but is upset when Erin volunteers to babysit for Jim and Pam so they can make it. Meanwhile Michael, who also auditioned, grapples with his envy over not getting a part.

Tropes

  • Brutal Honesty: A rare positive example. Michael assures Andy that he was awesome in the play, and that he can trust his opinion as unbiased since he has no filter and booed the lead actor.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Michael becomes envious when the lead got the role of Sweeney Todd without any audition at all.
  • Implausible Deniability: Michael when the lead of Sweeney Todd comes to confront him about booing him.
  • It's a Small World, After All: Darryl's plumber plays Sweeney Todd.
  • Shout-Out: Michael apparently did an entire episode of Law & Order for his audition. The closing scene of the episode is a cutaway of him starting it.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Downplayed; at the end, when Andy is down about how his play went, Oscar begins to point out the overall amateur quality of the production only to be shot down by Michael, who points out that his pretentiousness is neither helpful nor wanted at this point.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Andy's performance is genuinely well-liked by everyone despite all the mishaps, and Erin came to attend it.
