Tropes

  • Artistic License – Geography: Assuming they are taking the most direct driving route available (I-84 into Massachusetts then a series of highways north) to Nashua, the midpoint would be somewhere in the vicinity of Waterbury, CT. While by no means a sprawling metropolis, there are plenty of exits that provide exactly what Michael describes. It's all down to Rule of Funny.
  • Call-Back: Once again, Jim's Halloween costume is extremely low-effort, and Kelly's is as a pop-culture figure who is Caucasian.
  • Dresses the Same: Dwight, Kevin, and Creed all dress up as Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight.
  • Henpecked Fiance: Angela chose Andy's Halloween costume.
  • Insult Backfire: Andy tries to one-up Dwight by coming in the next day pretending to have started his own beet farm. However unlike Dwight who clearly did his research on Cornell when pretending to have applied, Andy knows nothing about beets, biting into one raw before realizing they're supposed to be cooked. As a result, Dwight is simply amused by the poor imitation (then he bites into one anyway).
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Andy proves that he knows very little about Cornell's history.
  • Not So Above It All: Dwight executes a Jim-style prank on Andy by pretending to have applied to Cornell.
  • Pet the Dog: Darryl takes pity on Michael after the breakup and tries to cheer him up by singing the blues.
  • Prank Gone Too Far: Jim's brothers and Pam decide to play a "prank" on Jim where they make fun of Pam's life choices in front of Jim. Pam only agreed to it because it was two against one and was in fact very offended.
Pam: They came up with that very quickly.
  • Put on a Bus: Holly gets transferred back to her old branch.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Darryl tries singing the blues with Michael, but Michael just repeats the note progression Darryl sings in a misinterpretation of what call-and-response is. Darryl, seeing that explaining is useless and it's actually making Michael feel better a little, rolls with it.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Last episode, David inadvertently discovered that Michael and Holly were a couple. Since a regional manager being romantically involved with his branch's HR representative naturally raises several ethics concerns (particularly with Michael, who's been proven to need someone objective to keep a leash on him), David immediately makes the decision to transfer Holly back to Nashua.
    • Michael has Darryl stop at a point that he says is exactly halfway between Scranton and Nashua. He's disappointed to find there's nothing but empty land for miles.
