Recap / The Office USS 5 E 23 Michael Scott Paper Company

Go To

Michael, Pam, and Ryan chafe working in such close quarters. After hosting a Paper & Pancakes luncheon, they are about to call it quits when Pam makes her first sale for the company.

Dwight and Andy's unlikely friendship is tested when they are both attracted to the new receptionist Erin. Jim spends his day trying to figure out what Charles means by his requested "run down".

Tropes

  • Battle of the Bands: Dwight and Andy compete over their musical skills in their attempts to woo Erin. Eventually subverted when they have too much fun jamming together and forget Erin is there. (Also they do it in the employee breakroom and Toby has them stop.)
  • Better the Devil You Know: Pam, realizing how much better she had it working for Dunder Mifflin over struggling in a new startup with Michael and Ryan, goes up to Dunder Mifflin and tries asking for her old job back, only to be told Charles has already hired Erin as her replacement. She then asks the camera crew to let her sit for a while, noting that the air in the office smells nice and the chairs are comfier than she remembered.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Kelly is embarrassed by her middle name of "Rajnigandha".
Kevin: I thought Rajnigandha was a boy's name.
  • Friends Turned Romantic Rivals: Andy and Dwight became friends since their duel, and are now invoking this trope.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted with Kelly, who happens to share a name with the new receptionist Kelly, and exploits this by acting as if Charles is asking for her every time he calls for Kelly the receptionist. To alleviate confusion, Kelly Hannon asks to go by her middle name "Erin" instead, which is what she'll be referred to as for the rest of the series.
  • Pet the Dog: Michael coaches Pam through her first sale, and then they celebrate when it goes through.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: Michael rolling in while "Just Dance" is playing in his car and proclaiming "It's Britney, bitch!" (even though the song's by Lady Gaga).
  • Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony: Michael tries to do one for his company quarters, but he can't seem to cut the ribbon, so he just takes it down by hand.
  • Sexiness Score: Ryan Howard refers to Pam as she is a "7 in Scranton" but only a "6 in New York". This gets a Call-Back in "Promos", when Dwight says that Angela is a "9" in terms of looks, but Clark corrects that she is a "Scranton 9".
  • Technician Versus Performer: With respect to their musical ability, Andy is the technician, focusing on harmonies and speed; while Dwight — with his preference for slow, soulful acoustic guitar — is the performer. The episode doesn't really seem to suggest either side is "better", though.
