Season 2 Episode 04:
SYZYGY
Karim visits Nina at the clinic for help finding the secret entrance to the house. Meanwhile, Hap meets a fellow traveler, and Homer goes on a date.Tropes present in this episode include:
- All Part of the Show: Averted. When Old Night begins strangling the OA in front of the crowd, the crowd begins to panic.
- Call-Back: In the OA's dream, she's wearing the purple wolf sweatshirt she bought back in Crestwood.
- Great Escape: Karim helps the OA escape from the clinic so she can help him find Michelle.
- I Have This Friend: Karim tells the OA a story about how his brother never wanted a relationship or kids, but fell in love with an amazing woman who also didn't want kids. Then one day, out of the blue, she told him she wanted a baby, and their relationship deteriorated. Later the OA figures out Karim was actually talking about himself.
- Never My Fault: Hap tries to convince himself it's the OA's fault that he killed Rachel.
- The Reveal:
- Hap meets another "traveler" who tells him about the various dimensions she's been to...and that there are other ways of traveling besides doing the movements with four other people.
- Its revealed the scene that opened the first episode, of a person falling from a great height after seeing the OA is a red gown, was actually a dream Karim once had. He brings it up when the OA puts on the same red gown to get ready to go to SYZYGY.
- Old Night claims that the OA has a brother.
- Shout-Out: Dr. Roberts' date mentions the Upside Down when he tells her that the OA claims they were underground together for 7 years.
- Title Drop: The OA and Karim find a note in Nina's closet that spells "SYZYGY"
- Too Much Information: The OA and Karim find tapes of Nina describing her dreams. When one of the dreams turns out to be sexual, they immediately pause the recording and move onto another one.
- Wham Episode: It turns out SYZYGY is a club that has a giant squid-like sea creature named Old Night, who can telepathically communicate with Nina and the OA. She's supposed to translate its thoughts for a crowd. It knows the OA isn't Nina and offers to kill her for 37 seconds so she can experience another NDE and gain information that will help her save the others.
