Recap / The Interns S 5 E 9

Go To

Yaroslavsky confronts Kisegach about Bykov: despite (or maybe, because?) he is her ex, she keeps tolerating his antics, instead of just firing him long ago. When she refuses, he decides to confront Bykov instead (which leads to nowhere). Yaroslavsky sees how Kisegach once again fails to show Bykov his place, and tells her that it's now or never: she must fire him. But Kisegach fails to do what Anton wants from her, revealing that not all feelings to Bykov have died.

Bykov's favourite ficus, Igor, is stolen, and Gleb and Semyon have one hour to find Igor, or it would be the last hour of their lives. They fails to find Igor in time (unknowingly to them, Lyuba hid it from them under Bykov's orders, so he can punish them for leaving from a night shift), and Bykov forces them to work as orderlies today. Varya tells them about Bykov's and Lyuba's scheme, and they "pays back" by peeing into Igor. After receiving Igor back, Bykov claims that it's fake, and throws it out of the window — before interns manages to tell him that it was indeed the real Igor; instead of understanding that he came too far, Bykov punishes them further.

Phil's patient is a rich old woman who dates her own son Albert... or, rather, he introduced himself as her son to avoid weird looks (given age difference), since he is actually her husband. Unknowingly to her, Albert only married her in hope to inherit her money, and can't wait for her death (and in fact already has a young lover). Fortunately, Phil overhears them, and tells his patient everything; when she doesn't believe him, he organises a "test" for her husband, which Albert completely fails, revealing his lies.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Amicable Exes: Yaroslavsky thinks that Kisegach is on too good terms with Bykov, despite him still acting like a jerk and manchild, and she must fire him, instead of tolerating his antics.
  • A Boy and His X: Bykov claims that his link to his favourite ficus, Igor, is so strong, he can immediately recognise that this ficus is not "him". Now, Gleb and Semyon must find the real Igor within one hour, or Bykov probably would kill them. Unknowingly to them, it was Lyuba who took Igor, under Bykov's explicit order, to punish them for leaving from their night shift. And then it turns out that those claims were a complete bullshit (though Bykov insists that this is because Lyuba washed Igor, so "he" now has a wrong smell), since when they brings him real Igor, he assumes that they lied and throws it out of the window. Oops...
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Phil just happens to overhear his patient's husband's discussing with his lover that he had only married an old woman for her money and can't wait for her to die, so he can inherit them.
  • Extreme Doormat: Yaroslavsky lampshades that Kisegach is way too tolerant towards Bykov's antics, which Bykov exploits by constantly humiliating her. She must fire him, now or never.
  • Gold Digger: Phil's patient is an old, but rich woman who married a "love of her life", Albert, who is much younger than her. Unknowingly to her, he is only with her in hope to inherit her money for himself and his young lover. When she doesn't believe him, Phil decides to prove it, by lying to Albert that his wife just died, to see his reaction. He immediately calls his lover, unaware that his wife stands just behind him and can hear everything. Then it turns out that Albert is not even the first one. Before him, there was Arthur. And Stepan. And Misha. And Sergey. And Felix...
  • Jerkass: Not only Albert is a Gold Digger, he calls his wife "old hag" when she can't hear him... or so he thinks.
  • May–December Romance: Phil's patient is an old woman, whose husband is much younger than her. In fact, he initially was introduced as her son, which leads to... interesting moments when Phil busts them kissing each other. Unknowingly to patient, her love is one-sided: her husband secretly hates her and waits for her death to inherit her money, and in fact has a young lover. Unfortunately for the guy, Phil overhears his conversation with said lover, and informs the patient.
  • Mrs. Robinson: As it turns out, Phil's patient has a long history of lovers much younger than her (all of them ended up being the Gold Diggers). When Phil attempts to comfort her when she decides that she's too old to find her love, she immediately tries to seduce him.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Yaroslavsky tells Bykov that he can either quit by himself (Anton would even help him with finding a job with better salary in another hospital — far away from here) and leave Anastasia alone, or he would just force her to kick Bykov out.
  • Parental Incest: Phil's patient is an old woman, who has... a little too intimate relationship with her son. Fortunately, it turns out that he is not her son... he is her husband.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Semyon and Gleb revealed where they found Igor right away, Bykov would not throw "him" out of the window. Now, they would be punished with another night shift, partly for leaving the previous one, and partly because Bykov considers the full situation with Igor to be their fault.
  • Put on a Bus: When Kysegach fails to fire Bykov despite Anton's insistences, Yaroslavsky gives up on her and leaves.
  • Relative Error: Phil's patient's husband, Albert, initially introduces himself as her son to avoid suspicions. Unfortunately, they gets busted by Phil kissing each other, which leads to... interesting situation.
  • Revenge by Proxy: How did Gleb and Semyon strike back at Bykov for leaving them on another night shift? By peeing into his favourite ficus, Igor.
  • Tempting Fate: Gleb tells that he was certain that Bykov wouldn't notice anything... cue to angry Bykov rushing back into on-call room and threaten to kill them with a scalpel unless they tell him what they did with real Igor.
  • Wham Episode: Yaroslavsky gives up on Anastasia and leaves. Kisegach realises that she still has feelings for Bykov... and he has for her, since he actually resisted Yaroslavsky's attempts to kick him out of Anastasia's life, because he wants to be with her.
