Recap / The Golden Girls S 06 E 16 There Goes The Bride

Go To

When Dorothy plans to remarry Stan, Sophia threatens to cut her off from the family. Dorothy proceeds with the wedding arrangements, while Rose and Blanche interview potential housemate Truby (Debbie Reynolds).

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Done indirectly. At one point Rose enters the kitchen singing “Singin’ In the Rain.” Debbie Reynolds, who played Kathy in the film of the same name, appears later as a guest star.
  • Estranged Soap Family: Neither of Dorothy and Stan's children, Kate and Michael, bother to attend their parents' wedding. Stan's brother Ted also doesn't show up, and neither does Dorothy's sister Gloria (who, we can very charitably assume, was warned off by her mother Sophia, who opposed the wedding up until the very last minute).
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue: At the beginning of Part 2, Sophia is losing to Blanche during a game of chess, and exclaims, "The game isn't over 'til the fat lady sings!" Cue Rose walking in happily singing "Singin' in the Rain".
    • Later in the episode, Rose throws Dorothy a bridal shower and makes the guests play games, including one where a heart-shaped sticker is taken off the player's clothing every time she crosses her legs. Dorothy protests: "Who leaves their legs uncrossed all the time?" Cue Blanche walking in covered with stickers.
  • Prenup Blowup: Dorothy becomes upset that Stanley asks her to sign a prenuptial agreement. This ends the engagement.
  • Running Gag: Rose installs a barking doorbell to the house which goes off every time someone arrives.
