Recap / The Golden Girls S 02 E 08 Vacation

Go To

Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche's vacation to a tropical island is a complete disaster. Meanwhile, Sophia befriends a Japanese gardener who speaks almost no English.

Tropes:

  • Beware the Nice Ones: After the two groups get shipwrecked, she immediately takes charge by stopping their bickering and ordering the guys to look for civilization and the girls to start a bonfire.
  • Butt-Monkey: Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche all go through an episode-long series of unfortunate events: their vacation spot is a dump, the motel "management" is so greedy and corrupt that his lone, embittered employee wants to shoot him, and they accidentally set sail into a storm that (momentarily) leaves them shipwrecked.
  • Call-Back: Earlier episodes had the three girls discussing where they would have their eventual vacation together, including New York City and Hollywood.
  • December–December Romance: Between Sophia and the gardener, who are both elderly.
  • Not So Remote: The girls mistakenly believe they are stranded on a Desert Island. It turns out they are on a beach shore on the same mainland they were staying on, and close to a major hotel that is much nicer than the one they were duped into staying at before.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Rose of course:
Rose: Did you call a cab, Dorothy?
Dorothy: No, Rose. I called two: one for me and Blanche, and one for you, because you're making me crazy with all your questions!
    • And a little later on, after it arrives:
Rose: Now who's cab is this one?
Dorothy: (whilst laughing) There's only one cab, Rose.
Rose: Well, how am I supposed to get to the airport?
    Dorothy: (annoyed) Run behind it!
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: After facing one embarrassment after another on their vacation, the girls and their new guy friends all end up heading for fun at a Club Med resort that they found.
  • Very False Advertising: When Rose books a vacation at a tropical location on behalf of the whole group, she falls for a dingy hotel's false claims of comforts. Since the room was paid for in advance and all of the features advertised turn out to be Metaphorically True, the Girls have no means of obtaining a refund and decide to stick it out for the weekend.
  • Would Harm a Senior: Played for Laughs, believe it or not. When the motel manager tries to claim they have an ocean view and he asks Rose to idenifty what she sees after sticking her head out of a window, she replies, "Two thugs beating up an old lady."
