- Badass Boast: Elder Kettle gets one after proclaiming that no varmint would make a meal of his surprise cake.Cuphead: This is no ordinary varmint!
Elder Kettle: Well, this is no ordinary kettle! - Balloon Belly: Werner temporarily gains one after devouring Elder Kettle's surprise cake.
- Cartoon Throbbing: Mugman's hand becomes huge and red after Werner Werman hits it with a mallet.
- Circling Birdies: After taking a few beatings from Werner, Cuphead and Mugman have "pain stars" circling their heads. Elder Kettle notices this and questions it.
- Comically Lop Sided Rivalry: All of the two cups' attempts to get rid of Werner end in the usual "cat and mouse" fashion of backfiring on them. It is only when Elder Kettle steps in that the odds become even.
- Gratuitous German: Werner greets Mugman with "guten Tag" (German for "hello", "good day", or "good afternoon"). Considering Werner is German, it fits.
- I Surrender, Suckers: At first, it seems like Elder Kettle forfeits the cottage to Werner to save Cuphead and Mugman. However, the moment he places the deed down for Werner to sign, he hands the rat a stick of dynamite in place of a pen.
- Late to the Realization: Mugman sees Werner in the pantry and simply greets him, then tells Cuphead about the rat in the pantry before realizing there's a vermin in the house.
- Pest Episode: Due to Cuphead and Mugman leaving the front door open, a rat enters the cottage and takes it over. Cuphead and Mugman attempt to get rid of him before Elder Kettle finds out.
- Pyrrhic Victory: In a prime example of "won the battle, lost the war", Elder Kettle gets rid of Werner at the cost of reducing the cottage to a smoking wreck.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being exploded by dynamite from Elder Kettle, Werner Werman decides to leave their house.
- Take a Third Option: Werner Werman offers a Sadistic Choice to Elder Kettle: either surrender his cottage, or Cuphead and Mugman will be blown up. Refusing to let him take his cottage, Elder Kettle instead tricks him by giving him a stick of dynamite.
- Thin-Skinned Bully: Werner spends the whole episode submitting the cups to slapstick artilery. When Elder Kettle gives him a taste of his own medicine, he moans (in a whiny, non-German accent) about how painful it was and bails in a huff.
- Would Hurt a Child: Werner has no problem with Cuphead and Mugman being injured by bombs. He also takes the boys hostage and threatens to ignite the TNT in their cups if Elder Kettle doesn’t sign the deed to the cottage over to him.
