Recap / The Croods: Family Tree S2E1 "Remote Control"

Go To

When the window loses its novelty, Thunk decides to leave the living room to partake in some real life drama. Or maybe cause a little too.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Dawn somehow manages to overcomplicate Eep's Simple, yet Awesome Boulder-Racing game by thinking of a bunch of unlikely things that could happen to her boulder, like the boulder cracking in half and suddenly repairing itself or growing wings and flying off.
  • Fantasy Counterpart Appliance:
    • One of Phil's prototype inventions is a ceiling fan made from plants and vines.
    • Phil manages to create what amounts to live feed using a system of mirrors thousands of years before it would be invented in Real Life. It even has audio!
  • Jerkass Ball: After Phil creates "Mirror Window", Thunk orchestrates various mishaps and unneeded drama among the Croods and Bettermans because he finds it so entertaining.
  • Mythology Gag: Thunk's drawing of Ugga looks like her design from Dawn of the Croods. She even asks if it's supposed to be her, a Take That! to how her design in the 2D-cartoon looked nothing like her design in the films and Family Tree.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Thunk leaving the couch is treated like Serious Business when people notice. Phil even thinks that it's an omen of the end-times based on a sarcastic quip he made at his expense.
  • Pranking Montage: Using Phil's new system of pulleys and levers, Thunk and Eep manage to prank everyone on the farm by making them slip on cups of water.
  • Pun: Mention of a "finish vine" instead of "finish line" is used throughout the episode.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Grug asks if Hope's pie is her new dessert, she sarcastically tells him that it's their new house.
Grug: It is? But it's so small.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Played for Laughs. When Douglas steals Hope's pie, everyone (sans Thunk and Eep, who organize it), chase him out of the house to get it. When Grug manages to get it, he slams it into the ground in celebration of his victory, realizing too late that he destroyed the pie.
  • Shout-Out: Dawn thinks the first rule of Boulder-Racing is "Don't talk about Boulder-Racing", a reference to the first (and second) rule of Fight Club in Fight Club.
  • Tempting Fate: Phil takes offense to Thunk's drawing implying that his inventions explode... right before the invention he's working on spews soot in his face.
