Recap / The Casagrandes S 2 E 5 Fools Gold Flight Plan

Go To

Fool's Gold: When they find a treasure map, the Casagrandes go on a wild search for Pancho Villa's gold.

Flight Plan: Frida and Carlos go on a fancy plane ride, but Carl, CJ and Carlitos try to sneak on for an adventure of their own.

"Fool's Gold" provides examples of:

  • Bird-Poop Gag: The second letter is at the top of the lighthouse, where a flock of pigeons attack Hector by pooping all over him.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Hector has yet another bobo Bobby moment when he accidentally texts everyone (except Rosa) about his, Carlos, CJ, and Carl's quest for Pancho Villa's gold.
  • Hold Up Your Score: As Hector falls from the lighthouse after collecting the second clue, Carlos and CJ rate his landing a 10, while Carl rates it an 8.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: To obtain the third clue, Carlos must defeat a giant boxing squid. He does so, but not before taking quite a thrashing.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After fighting with the whole neighborhood over the treasure, the Casagrande-men have to watch as all the gold coins get swallowed up by Betsy the elephant. And to add insult to injury, they weren't even real gold coins; they were just a bunch of chocolate coins wrapped up in gold-colored coupons to a taqueria called "Pancho Villa's Tacos."
    • Upon learning this, Hector reveals that Pancho Villa's Tacos was where he and Rosa had their first date when they were younger and deduces that he must've kept the message-in-a-bottle (where he, his son and his grandsons found the treasure map) as a souvenir before eventually forgetting about it.
  • Spiders Are Scary: This episode reveals that Carlos is arachnophobic.
  • Treasure Map: The premise of the episode is that the Casagrandes find a treasure map and use it to seek Pancho Villa's lost gold, which, legend has it, was buried in the days of Hector's great-great-grandfather.
  • You Dirty Rat!: Carl obtains the fourth clue, which is stuck to a discarded piece of pizza and guarded by lots of rats.

"Flight Plan" provides examples of:

  • Artistic License: The plane Carlos and Frida ride on is a World War II P-40 Warhawk. In actual fact, this model of plane is designed to seat only one person.
  • Babysitter's Nightmare: The Casagrande brothers invoke this trope, as they don't want to be babysat, instead wanting to ride with their parents on a plane, so they drive away all of the babysitters. They do this by destroying Mr. Nakamura's antique toys, scaring Miranda, and tricking Maybelle into thinking her celeb crush wants to meet her.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Carlos and Frida try to hire Mr. Nakamura as a babysitter for their kids while they are flying in a P-40 Warhawk. Disappointed at this setback, CJ, Carl, and Carlitos invoke this trope so they can fly in the plane with their parents. Then, they do the same thing to Miranda and Maybelle.
  • Dirty Old Woman: Maybelle spends her babysitting time making the kids do chores and swooning over a muscular man in a magazine. The kids are disgusted at the latter.
  • I Want My Mommy!: Carl says this word-for-word when he has to work the hi-tech plane himself and realizes that his desire to get on the P-40 Warhawk got him into this mess.
  • Ocular Gushers: Carl, CJ, and Carlitos do this together when they accidentally get the hi-tech plane in manual mode. Looks like they're all Frida's boys!
  • Oh, Crap!: CJ, Carl, and Carlitos' reactions to finding out that 1) they got on the wrong plane, and 2) it's headed for the Arctic.
  • Plothole: Carlos and Frida have to ask a babysitter to watch their sons because the rest of the family wasn't available even though Carlota was seen earlier.
  • Rule of Three: Carlos and Frida hire three people to babysit CJ, Carl, and Carlitos; Mr. Nakamura, Miranda, and Maybelle.
  • Tears of Joy: At the beginning of the episode, Frida sheds these when Carlos, Carlota, CJ, Carl, and Carlitos have made a portrait of her out of breakfast food as an anniversary present. It almost looks too good to eat.
