The Backyardigans pretend to be pirates in two separate teams searching for a mysterious treasure, with Captains Uniqua and Austin as one crew, and Captains Pablo and Tyrone as the other.

"Arr! Let's search for the buried tropes!":

  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • Uniqua has a noticeable case of Elmuh Fudd Syndwome, pronouncing "pirate" as "piwate".
    • When the scenery changes around Pablo and Tyrone, they don't provide the detailed description of the proposed setting, as it would be done in later episodes.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Uniqua's pirate characteristic, notable in that it's the only one present before the setting changes.
  • Friendly Pirate: All four characters present. Rather than keeping the treasure for themselves, they wonder about the possibility of other pirates stealing them away, and decide to bury it back in its original spot for safekeeping.
  • Group-Identifying Feature: Uniqua has an eyepatch, Austin has a hook for a hand, Pablo has a peg leg, and Tyrone has a wooden ear.
  • Hook Hand: Austin's pirate characteristic.
  • Pirate: The whole premise of the episode is that the characters are these.
  • Pirate Song: "A Pirate Says 'Arr'"", and arguably "What Do You Do With a Scurvy Pirate?" as well.
  • To the Tune of...: "What Do You Do With a Scurvy Pirate?" shares it tune to the song "Drunken Sailor".
  • Walk the Plank: Pablo and Tyrone have Uniqua and Austin do this, but before they can jump off, the ship harbors into the island where the treasure is located.
  • "X" Marks the Spot: Parodied. The treasure is indeed buried underneath an X, but the crew first finds a U, a V, and a W.

Y Marks the Spot

"No one would ever think to look under a Y."

How well does it match the trope?
