Chapter 8: Enrolling Stones

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Didn't Think This Through: Matt's plan of trapping Luz Noceda into the Detention Pit so that she would not expose him as a fraud in the H.A.S falls apart due to failing to realize just how well-liked Luz is in Hexside. Her friends are going to be more concerned that she has gone missing rather than have their meeting and go out to look for her and soon find out that Matt is responsible for her disappearance.
  • Hero of Another Story: The last time Bump had met an angel (Cassiel) was when she had helped stage an uprising among Hexside's student-body, ending with Bump being made Principle and his tyrannical predecessor Faust being fed to the Kindergartners.
Bump: That's what happens when you turn a non-violent protest into a fight... and also ban the Kindergarteners' snack time...
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite not being banned in this version, Luz is still thrown in Detention thanks to Mattholomule's manipulations.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Luz finds out that Bump is her Secret-Keeper.
    • Gus and Willow learn that Luz is an angel.
  • Mundane Utility: Luz uses light magic to conjure sparkling confetti for the "dazzle".
  • Phlebotinum Overload: When the Detention Pit eats Luz, her magic drives it into a frenzy, causing serious damage to the school.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When everyone learns what Mattholemewl did to Luz (throw her into the detention pit), Gus formulates a complicated plan that will result in throwing Mattholemewl into it as an offering. Then Willow brings up that they could just tell Bump what's going on and he'll sort it out. It probably would have worked if her magic hadn't driven the Detention Pit to a frenzy.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Angels tend to share a strong physical resemblance to those within their Crest, Bump remarking Luz's resemblance to Cassiel.
