Chapter 4: Mandragora Madness

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Abilene Paradox: Willow's parents are understandably shocked when they discover how much Willow has been struggling in the Abomination Track, thinking she wanted to do it and was thriving, while she was keeping her distaste towards it a secret from them because she thought they would be disappointed in her for not following in their footsteps.
  • Humans Through Alien Eyes: When Gus sees pictures of humans using hair straighteners, he thinks they're "torturing their hair."
  • Mundane Utility: When Boscha learns about how unique Luz is when it comes to magic (immunity to oracle magic, her creativity in helping Willow with her homework, her talents with Bard Magic and outdoing Boscha in potions), she thinks she would be the perfect recruit for Grudgby.
  • Phlebotinum Overload: Bile Overload is when a witch's magic bile-sac produces more magic than their bodies can process, causing Power Incontinence and temporary emotional instability. While it's common for children still learning how to use magic, some can have Bile Overload under intense emotional stress, Willow going berserk and turning Hexside into a jungle when Luz gets hurt defending her.
  • Plant Person: Mandragoras are a thought-to-be extinct species of plant demon that reproduce by capturing witches and other demons, harvesting their DNA and then recycling their corpses as nutrition for them.
  • Point of Divergence: While "I Was a Teenage Abomination" ended with Luz being banned from Hexside for the chaos she caused, instead he offers to allow her to enroll in exchange for a "favour" from Eda, something that wouldn't happen until "Something Ventured, Someone Framed".
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: After driving the Mandragora away, Principle Bump dolls out fair punishments for the incident. Boscha has to help construction until it's finished because her behavior started the incident. Amity, Amelia, Skara, and Jeb help for a week for escalating things; Bo and Cat only help for three days because they helped Luz heal the injured. Luz and Gus are exempt for being the victims and Willow won't be punished because witches suffering from Bile Overload can't be held accountable for their actions while experiencing it. And of course he has Willow transferred to the Plant Track when he finds out that she used plant magic to cheat on her abomination homework, recognizing that her potential is wasted in Homunculus' class.
  • Secret-Keeper: Bump reveals that not only did he know that Luz was secretly an angel the whole time, but that she isn't the first angel he's met.
  • Wham Line:
Bump: But you should be careful she doesn't cause too much. It could draw attention.
Eda: You know something I don't, Bump?
Bump: Young Luz is not the first angel to come to the Boiling Isles since Belos arrived.
