Recap / The Americans S4E1 - Glanders

Go To

"Clark" goes to Martha's and tells her about killing Gene, which she's horrified about. At work, everyone acts like they always knew there was something wrong with Gene, though Stan does offer consolation to Martha. She tells "Clark" the office's reaction, and he tells her Gene didn't suffer. He also asks Martha to check surveillance reports (see below).

Paige is still upset about the news about her parents, but she tells Pastor Tim it was wrong to tell him about her parents, but he suggests she bring her parents around so they can all discuss things.

Gabriel, who's still furious about Elizabeth going to see her mother (even though he's glad to hear it may have helped Paige), tells Elizabeth and Philip about William (Dylan Baker), an agent who's been working with biological pathogens at a bioweapons lab being contracted by the Department of Defense, and tells them to meet with him. Elizabeth and Philip call off the meeting twice because they believe William is being tailed by the FBI, but the third time, they do meet with him, and he gives them a tin box containing a deadly bacteria strain.

Anton is able to develop the technology for the stealth plane, and while it's not as good as what the Americans have, it's good enough to satisfy Vasili and his bosses at the Centre. Because the Centre is pleased with her efforts, Nina demands she get to meet her husband.

Philip goes to more EST meetings alone, and after he opens up about having to deal with some bullies when he was younger, he and Sandra meet afterwards and discuss what he's said. Tori, who's still seeing Stan, sees the two of them, and tells Stan, who goes to visit Philip, and asks if he and Sandra are sleeping together. Philip tries to explain about EST, but Stan doesn't want to hear it, shoves Philip against the wall, and says, "Screw you."

Elsewhere, Tatiana is communicating with the Centre directly and not telling Arkady about it, so he asks Oleg to keep an eye on her.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Anton admits to Nina he was cheating on his wife, and that's how the KGB got to him.
  • Continuity Nod: Operation Zephyr is still going on, and Arkady talks to Oleg about it.
  • Demoted to Extra: Susan Misner is no longer in the opening credits, and while she appears in this episode, she appears less frequently as the series goes on.
  • Flashback: Philip, both during his EST session and before, remembers confronting bullies as a kid.
  • Foreshadowing: The secret project Tatiana is working on will become important later, as will Gabriel's attempts to get William "Level 4" access.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Neither Martha nor Paige use this exact phrase, but they have this reaction - Martha when "Clark" tells her about Gene, and Paige when she's with Pastor Tim and feeling remorseful about telling him about her parents.
  • Persona Non Grata: While Stan isn't quite this way at work, he tells Tori he's unpopular he might as well be this.
  • Properly Paranoid: Zigzagged - Philip and then Elizabeth each call off meeting with William because they think the FBI is watching when they spot a suspicious car. Turns out Philip was wrong, but Elizabeth was right.
  • Terminology Title: Glanders is a real disease that still has no cure. This will become important in later episodes.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Barely averted; when Stan is having his physical confrontation with Philip, he grabs the part of Philip's coat that contains the bacteria. If Stan had broken the box in Philip's coat, or let it come loose, the two of them would have been dead.
