Recap / The Americans S3E12 - I Am Abassin Zadran

Go To

"Clark" goes to visit Martha when Hans warns him off. It turns out Stan is visiting Martha to find out why she's been so distracted lately at work. The next day, "Clark" does meet with a badly frightened Martha, and promises her he'll figure things out, though she will only get to meet him at his apartment from now on. She calls her parents and lies that everything is fine, but when "Clark" comes to see her again, Martha has her bags packed, and says she and "Clark" need a break. At this point, "Clark" takes off his wig and glasses to show her who he really is.

Elizabeth and Philip are able to wire the phones in the hotel so they can arrange to see Abassin Zadran (George Georgiou), one of the mujahadeen. Posing as CIA operatives, they tell Zadran the other mujahadeen he's meeting with are traitors who will sell him out to protect their families. When Zadran does meet with the other mujahadeen, he ends up killing them before the real CIA handlers can stop him.

Paige continues to be freaked out by what she learned about her parents, to the point she goes to stay the night at Pastor Tim's house after going to a speaker at the church. Elizabeth and Philip, worried at what she might tell Pastor Tim, go over to his house and convince Pastor Tim she was asking to stay over without their permission. Abashed, Pastor Tim lets them take Paige back home. Paige is unrepentant, and continues to question what's real, softening only when Philip shows real photos of Paige and Henry when they were young, which makes Paige remember things. Philip tells Elizabeth she should take Paige along with her when she goes to visit her mother.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth exchanges the money with Maurice for the photos Lisa took, Aderholt continues to press Stan about Nina, and Arkady admits Operation Zephyr is a mistake, but both Oleg and Tatiana think they should let it run out its course.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Badass Boast: Zadran claims to have killed many Russians with his knife (though he backs that up when he kills the other two mujahadeen).
  • Call-Back: Paige brings up her visit to "Aunt Helen".
  • The Cameo: Claudia appears with Gabriel in a diner, telling him despite his misgivings, getting Paige involved is the right thing to do for everybody, including Paige and Philip (the latter of whom Gabriel is the most worried about).
  • Character Title
  • Diegetic Switch: When Elizabeth tells Paige she's taking her to visit her own mother, Ultravox's "Vienna" is playing on the radio, and it switches to score when it goes into the next scene.note
  • Dramatic Unmask: "Clark" taking off his wig and glasses to reveal himself to Martha, which is all the more effective as it comes at the end of the episode.
  • Shout-Out: One of the conversations picked up by the bug in the Mail Robot involves FBI workers discussing The King of Comedy.
