Recap / Street Sharks S 01 EP 06 Shark N Roll

Go To

Original air date: October 14, 1994

While the Street Sharks attend a costumed rock concert, wannabe artist Melvin Kresnik eats popcorn tainted with gene-slamming formula and transforms into a shark, dubbing himself Rox. Paradigm tries to take advantage of Rox, offering him stardom in exchange for betraying the Street Sharks to him, all while enacting a plan to gene-slam the entire concert's audience.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Heel–Face Turn: Rox initially agrees to help Paradigm due to being annoyed with Streex stealing female attention from him. When he learns more of Paradigm's plan and the Bolton's situation, however, he has a change of heart and joins forces with them.
  • Non-Mammalian Hair: Rox still has a full head of hair despite being a shark. This is the first clue that something is different about the way he was gene-slammed - even Paradigm is surprised to see it, remarking that it "wasn't in [his] formula".
  • Reveling in the New Form: Rox is initially horrified to discover he's turned into a shark... but quickly comes around after a second look in the mirror.
  • Spanner in the Works: The transformed Dr. Bolton steals some of the popcorn and treats it with a salt that cancels out the mind-control elements in the gene-slamming formula. When Rox eats it, therefore, he doesn't end up under Paradigm's control - and thus freely turns against him.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Paradigm's plan is to sell popcorn and soda at the concert, each tainted with the remaining half of his gene-slamming formula, thus mutating the entirety of the concert's audience
  • The Trope Formerly Known as X: Rox describes himself as "the artist formerly known as Melvin Kresnik", symbolizing him ditching his unpopular old self and becoming a more outgoing person.
