Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Manga: Introduction Arc

Go To

Westalian agent Twilight is tasked with accomplishing Operation Strix by enrolling a child into Eden Academy to approach Donovan Desmond. As Loid Forger, he begins by putting together the Forger Family.

Tropes related to Introduction Arc:

  • Becoming the Mask: Twilight takes his first steps into becoming a true father by saving Anya from Edgar and celebrating when she passes the entrance exam.
  • Blatant Lies: After leaving Carol's dinner party, Loid and Yor are pursued by a group of smugglers he had fought off earlier that night. Loid claims that they are merely his patients suffering from a violent episode.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Edgar challenges the legendary spy "Twilight"... and is lucky he's still alive.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Loid instructs Anya to act as if he has always been her daughter. When Anya meets one of her neighbors, her introduction raises an eyebrow:
"I'm Anya, and I've always been Papa's child."
  • Contrived Coincidence:
    • The first orphanage Loid visits, has Anya who has the ability to read minds.
    • Loid meets Yor, an assassin, while taking Anya to the tailor for her uniform.
  • Dinner And A Break Up: Twilight's previous assignment involved him dating Karen, the daughter of his criminal target. He unceremoniously dumps her at a restaurant after completing the mission (to add insult to injury, right after another customer proposes to his partner).
  • Fish out of Water: Twilight finds himself in this position upon taking Anya in.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After rationalizing leaving Anya, Loid immediately chides himself by realizing he never should have put Anya in danger in the first place.
  • Oh, Crap!: Edgar's face screams this when "Twilight" tells him he knows Karen, Edgar's daughter and is horrified when hearing that she is a criminal as well.
  • Older Than She Looks: While Anya claims to be six, Twilight's first thoughts upon seeing her is that she's no older than five. Seeing as Anya's a telepath, it's quite possible (if not likely) that she invoked this in order to increase her chances of getting adopted.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Anya's Plan A is to skim off the answers from fellow students' minds, only to be shocked that even they don't know the answers. She has to remember her sessions with Loid to pass the exam.
    • Part of Eden's admission requirements is a mandatory interview with both parents. Unfortunately, a recent wave of spy hunts has left Twilight without any female operatives suitable for the role, forcing him to find a civilian willing to join the charade.
