Sinjid: Shadow of the Warrior

An evil warlord named Lord Baka has ordered an attack on a small village, ending many innocent lives. As he walked away, unfazed by the destruction he caused, a man named Fujin fought his way through the village, cutting through his soldiers with ease. He continues his quest through a bamboo forest, and meets the legendary guardian Hattori there, surprised to see that he brought his infant son Sinjid along with him. Hattori tells Fujin to take Sinjid to the mountains and teach him the way of the shadow so he will survive, for he must survive in this doomed world. Fujin warns him that he won't survive the war or see his son ever again, but he persists, stating that if he can drive the enemy away from the mountains, it will be worth it.

20 years later, Sinjid has mastered the art of being a ninja, but has never killed another person in battle before. Fujin assigns with the task of killing all the fighters in the Human Portal of the Shadow Temple before heading off for reasons unknown to anyone but himself. Sinjid accepts this task, and succeeds. He heads for Fujin's house, happy to have fulfilled his will, but discovers that his house is empty. He finds a note from him, telling him that he had left to seek out an old friend, and that he is to defend the coastline from a fallen army and seek out the great one. The last we see is Sinjid battling a pair of samurai, and the game ends.

Sinjid

Sinjid is falsely arrested for murdering Fujin, and is sentenced to seven years in prison while the real killer remains free. His captor, Lord Masaru, states that the Imperial Empire is at war with the Shogun, and that they need someone skilled enough to have killed the greatest Shinobi to fight the war for them. He promises that Sinjid will be pardoned for his alleged crimes if he cooperates with him, and he sets off on his quest to kill the Shogun's warlords and find his master's true killer. He receives assistance from Scout Eri, a scout assigned with giving him tactical information so he knows what he's going up against.

While on his quest to end the war, he encounters an enigmatic man named Kazuro, who knows about his past. The war ends after he kills the last warlord, and the Imperial Army decides to call it quits and heads off. Sinjid, however, chooses to continue his quest, determined to find the real killer and figure out who this Kazuro guy is. A woman named Midori, who previously allowed him to take refuge in the Emerald Temple and gave him quests until he rescued Masaru from Lord Takeshi, overhears him, and directs him to the Fallen Kingdom, where the Old King hides. The Old King knows very well who Kazuro is;Kazuro defeated him seven years ago, forcing him into hiding.

The Old King explains his story to Sinjid: One day, a man named Kazuro came to the island. He had a very charming voice; he could convince anyone to do anything for him, from joining his army to building him a fortress. Fearing the worst, the Old King and his allies fought Kazuro, and lost. By chanting certain words, he could create clones of his enemies, and these clones easily killed the warlords who stood up against him, who were set aghast by his abilities, which were said to be the devil's work. Fearing that Kazuro would come after him, the Old King fled and went into hiding. He warns Sinjid not to pursue such a dangerous man, but he persists, stating that the two have unfinished business.

The Old King directs Sinjid to the Haruki residence, stating that Lord Haruki may know where Kazuro is hiding, as he built a castle for him once, but warns him that the retainers and priests are not to be taken lightly. Sinjid asks the retainer Lord Tetsuo where he can find Lord Haruki, but he refuses to tell him, stating that he is not to be disturbed. He persists, and the two fight to the death. Sinjid wins, and locates Lord Haruki. Lord Haruki explains that he built two castles for Kazuro: one in Ishisan and one in Shiroda. They decide that Ishisan would be a better hiding place because it's so quiet, and the king becomes saddened by the fact that he fled when he should have retained his honor and fought Kazuro instead, but Sinjid reassures him that there is no shame in self-preservation, and heads off. When he reaches Ishisan, he finds Kazuro. Kazuro tells Sinjid how he knows him: like Sinjid, he was an orphan who was taken in by Fujin, but left while Sinjid was young, which is why he doesn't remember him. Sinjid angrily asks him if he was the one who killed Fujin, and Kazuro tries to reason with him. Failing that, he states that the two are more similar than he realizes, and leaves, ordering his retainer to hold him off. Sinjid beats the retainer, and receives a big surprise during his pursuit of Kazuro: Kasumi, the deadliest Shinobi in the Imperial Army, has been persuaded by Kazuro into joining his side.

Kasumi explains that Kazuro gave her the option to join her side or die, and that she gladly joined him, having decided that she has had enough of Lord Masaru and his agenda. Sinjid, angry at the traitor for stooping so low, kills her. He heads back to the Old King, and they conclude that Kazuro is in Shiroda. He warns him about the dangers present, and he heads off on his quest to find Kazuro. He finds Kazuro, and is horrified to learn that he was the one who killed Fujin. Kazuro explains his side of the story; he noticed that Fujin was suspiciously kind to his students, and considering that he has had taken many orphans under his care, he concluded that the Imperial Army orphaned many children during times of war, and that Fujin himself murdered their parents in cold blood. He becomes broken and his beilief in his master wavers, but because there is no proof, Sinjid concludes that Kazuro killed him for selfish purposes. The two fight, but Sinjid ultimately comes out on top, resolving the story. Distraught by everything he went through, Sinjid then decides he wants to retire (for now, that is).
