  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original novel, Arthur Morstan is a captain in the British military stationed in India. In the episode, he is a miner on the Moon.
  • Inspector Javert: Almost as unhelpful as Inspector Grayson, as Inspector Fairly is quick to assume Thad is responsible for breaking the window and almost doom everyone in the room because of an emergency call from Edward, disregarding Watson's word that the opposite happened despite being a potential eyewitness. It takes Holmes re-telling the story, along with revealing Morstan used an explosive that clears both brothers of near accidental murder.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Morstan overheard the brothers arguing over what to do with the half of he inheritance that's due to his daughter. Rather than reveal to the world he's alive, reunite with his daughter and insist on what's owed to him, he tries to steal the jewels himself in a space suit. Notably, he never bothers to confirm for the brothers, who think the other is trying to kill them for the inheritance, he's not one of them, causing their already strained relationship to worsen until Sherlock clarifies for everyone.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the original novel, Arthur Morstan died from a heart attack. In the episode, Arthur Morstan was believed to have died in a mine collapse but in actuality, he survived.
