Go To

The death of Jill Tracy provides a lifesaving opportunity for 3 patients. But her death is just the start of a tragic chain of events for Dr. Cox and J.D.

  • Back for the Dead: Jill Tracy returns for her 3rd appearance, but dies before the halfway mark of the episode.
  • Depraved Bisexual: The Todd, by the end of the episode.
  • Freak Out: Cox trashes Bradford's room when the man flatlines at the end of the episode.
  • Heroic BSoD: Dr. Cox completely breaks down when the last of his three transplant patients die, sending him into a spiral that ends with him walking out of the hospital.
J.D. Remember what you told me? The second you start blaming yourself for people's deaths, there's no coming back.
    Dr. Cox: Yeah, you're right.
  • Hope Spot: J.D. goes to comfort Dr. Cox after the deaths of Mrs. Sikes and Mr. Dennison, intent on giving him the same pep talk that Cox provided him earlier in the wake of Jill's death. It briefly gets through to Perry, as it's pointed out that those patients were going to die in a number of hours anyway and that it would have been irresponsible to check for rabies given how few reported cases there are for it per year. Just as J.D. becomes optimistic that he's succeeded in pulling Dr. Cox out of his funk, they get word that Mr. Bradford is in critical condition, and he soon flatlines despite Cox's best efforts. A despondent Cox notes to J.D. that, unlike the other cases, Bradford could have waited up to a month for a kidney, signaling that Cox believes his own hastiness doomed the man. He then exits the hospital, dismissing J.D.'s attempts to stop him.
  • Hypocrite: Played for tragedy, Cox gives J.D. a pep talk about not blaming himself for Jill Tracy's death, because there was nothing that could've been done, when Mr. Bradford dies, Cox loses it, even claiming Mr. Bradford could have waited for a new kidney, despite the fact that they could not have predicted the cause of Jill's death was rabies, owing to the rarity of a human dying of rabies (Only 3 cases were reported in 2006).
  • Manly Tears: It's hard to spot, but Cox is crying when he walks out at the end.
  • No Bisexuals: The characters seem to believe this about the world; that a guy is either gay or straight; and are dumbfounded when Todd defies the trope by harassing both men and women.
  • Oh, Crap!: The general reaction when Dr. Cox and J.D. discover Jill died of rabies. And they just gave 3 patients her organs...
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The fact that Kelso arrives with Jill's autopsy report and doesn't have an insult, a sneer, or a smile when telling Cox. He is just to the point. That is the first warning that this is going to be bad: Kelso knows this just turned utterly grim.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: This situation did happen a few years before the episode aired, albeit not in a single hospital.
  • Rule of Drama: It's extremely unlikely that one hospital would receive all the donated organs from a deceased patient, but the episode doesn't happen otherwise.
