Chapter 18

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In canon, the healing mantras aren't introduced until "The Deadly Venom", over a season after "Mikey Gets Shellacne". Here Splinter uses it to slow down Leo's shellacne.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: As gross as the idea of canon!Mikey popping like one giant zit can be, here Donnie explains that if Leo's zits pop, the sheer number of them popping and the force of it would mean that he would bleed out.
  • Easily Forgiven: While everyone is understandably furious at Mikey for turning Leonardo into a ticking time-bomb, the only one who remains calm is Leo himself.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • In "Mikey Gets Shellacne", Michelangelo rubbed the defunct mutagen on himself. Here he did it to Leo, having poured some in his bath-salts.
    • Because of TCRI being destroyed, the Hamatos had to steal a centrifuge from the World Wide Genome Project.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While the Hamatos are human here and they could just buy a centrifuge, the cost of getting one and how long it would take to ship means they would have to steal one anyway.
  • Mythology Gag: In the later stages of shellacne, Leo starts hallucinating and sees Splinter as a rat and Tang Shen as a ghost.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Mikey thought that the "cool" defunct retro-mutagen would help Leo relax, seeing the continuing stress being their leader has been putting on him. Unfortunately, all it did was turn Leo into a ticking time-bomb via mutant zits.
