Recap / SMG4 - The Melancholy of Fishy Boopkins

Go To

In light of recent Bob related events, Fishy Boopkins is depressed. What could the SMG4 crew have planned to cheer him up?

Still reeling from Bob's brutal speech, SMG4 and friends try to cheer him up.

This is the fifth episode of the Rapper Bob Arc.

Upload Date: December 8, 2018

The Melancholy of Fishy Boopkins provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Despite everyone's best efforts to cheer Boopkins up, he's right back where he started in the very next episode. Tari even says that taking him to a Sexy Maid Cafe will only make him happy for a little bit.
  • The Cameo: Several at the Maid Cafe:
  • Cheer Up Episode: The entire episode is dedicated to lifting up Boopkins' spirits after Bob's horrible speech two episodes ago.
  • Continuity Nod: The Staff of Rejection is in SMG4's box of memes.
  • Dramatic Irony: Tari, Saiko and Meggy try to cheer up Boopkins by taking him to one of Bob's concerts. As the audience knows from watching "The Mario Concert", Bob is the reason behind Boopkins' Heroic BSoD, but none of the girls would know this since they weren't in that episode. As an added twist of the knife, the girls explain that their reason was because they remembered how good friends Boopkins and Bob were. This, combined with seeing Bob perform to a sold out crowd and seemingly getting off scot-free for his actions, ends up sending Boopkins over the edge.
    • For another layer of irony, the girls' attempt to cheer Boopkins up is the only one that is genuinely considerate note  of his feelings and the only non-comedic attempt to help him. It ends up being the one that hurts him the most.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Saiko, hungry for attention and unaware of what Bob did to Boopkins, ditches him, Meggy, and Tari to work for Bob.
  • Faint in Shock: Meggy faints when she sees Heavy Weapons Guy dressed as a "pretty princess".
  • Fan Disservice:
    • Bob's merchandise includes dakimakuras of himself. One lands on Meggy and it's enough to make her spontaneously combust out of sheer repulsion.
    • Heavy Weapons Guy in drag. That is all.
  • Filler: Not much of the Rapper Bob arc progresses here. Everyone's #1 priority is to make Boopkins feel better, but as stated above, he's right back into his Heroic BSoD all over again in the next episode. You can cut this episode out entirely and all you would be missing is Saiko partnering up with Bob—which some people forgot about anyway.
  • Heroic BSoD: Boopkins, obviously.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog:
Saiko: Hey uh... Why don't you guys go find Boopkins... I have to go uh... umm... Yeah...
  • Leave Me Alone!: Boopkins insists that he'd rather be left alone then have everyone try to cheer him up.
  • Ocular Gushers: After being betrayed and abandoned by Bob, seeing him on stage living it up and basking in the fame becomes too much for Boopkins. He bursts into tears and runs out on the concert.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • SMG4 freaks out when Boopkins tells him that he's too sad to watch anime, as do the other characters when SMG4 tells them this.
    • Despite her major phobia of anime, Meggy is the one who takes Boopkins to the maid cafe because she's that worried about him.
  • Shout-Out: The title is one to Haruhi Suzumiya.
  • Skewed Priorities: After Toad dresses up as Bob, as commanded by Luigi to make Boopkins feel better, Boopkins hugs Toad so tight that he suffocates. Boopkins instantly cries over supposedly killing Bob, only for Luigi to pop in and tell him that it was Toad dressed up as Bob who he killed. Boopkins mopes over not actually seeing Bob rather than the fact that he still killed someone.
  • Stunned Silence: Meggy and Tari's reaction to Saiko leaping out of the audience to work for Bob.
  • True Companions: Everyone immediately prioritizes on cheering Boopkins up after hearing how depressed he is.
