Pirate Pete, on the docks near Port Phasmatys, has a quest for you. It's the usual stuff involving evil brothers and lost fortunes... except not. He was lying, and when you accept the quest, he hits you on the head and transports you to Braindeath Island while you're unconscious. The real quest is here.
Braindeath Island is the home of Captain Braindeath, a former pirate captain who settled here to brew his secret recipe for 'rum' (and yes, the quotes are entirely intentional). He supplies his swill to some dodgier bars around the world, except he's run into an unusual problem... zombie pirate protestors (originally besiegers, but they kinda lost their will for that a few days in) who want some 'rum' for themselves. Braindeath's plan is to get their leader, Captain Donnie, drunk with some 'rum' so he'll reveal who sent him. However, all the zombie protestors have made production stop, and he needs someone (you) to help re-make it with local ingredients.
After you dodge and intimidate pirate protestors into leaving you alone, fish for sea slugs, fight fever spiders, and exorcise the brewing equipment, you get a bucket of unsanitary swill to take to Donnie. While Donnie does not become drunk, he does let slip the name of his boss- Rabid Jack.
… Who Captain Braindeath has apparently never heard of.
Anyways, production is back on in the island, and you've been a big help. Congratulations, quest complete!
Rum Tropes
- Gargle Blaster: Braindeath 'Rum'. It's always written in scare quotes, and for good reason. Unlike real rum, which is made of fermented sugarcane or molasses, this drink is made of a plant called blindweed, the corpse of a fever spider (you need to wear thick gloves so they don't infect you with the disease they carry), sea slugs (which can control minds), stagnant water, and (optionally) karamthulhu. It's apparently normal for the equipment to get possessed by evil spirits during the brewing process, and when you drink the rum yourself (only possible after the quest) you get the message that "you try very hard not to die".
- Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Captain Braindeath and his employees are Pirate Brewers, and Donnie's crew are Zombie Pirate Protestors.
- Relax-o-Vision: Your insults to the pirates are censored with short cutscenes of kittens.
- Seadog Peg Leg: 50% Luke (a zombie guarding the volcano with the stagnant lake) has lost one entire half of his body, and has a wooden replacement.
