Recap / Runescape Aftermath

Go To

Following the events of Twilight of the Gods, the World Guardian meets Adrasteia in Falador for a critical update: Zamorak is at the Wilderness Volcano, where the Edicts Monument is, and he's fortified his position with a magical barrier that even Saradomin can't get through. However, Azzanadra's agents found a way in: a new part of Senntisten that seems to be some kind of Zamorakian district, and the Avernic demons have moved in. They have a portal to Infernus inside, and the World Guardian can use it to reach Zamorak.

The World Guardian enters the Zamorakian Undercity, battles their way through, reaches Zamorak and reestablishes the Edicts. Afterwards, they head back to Adrasteia and Saradomin. Saradomin confirms that the Edicts have been reestablished and Zamorak is gone. The surviving demons have withdrawn to the Wilderness, and aren't causing the rest of Gielinor any trouble. Saradomin says that he'll have to leave soon, and so he'll have to appoint a successor to lead Gielinor's Saradominist countries in his stead- but it's not Zilyana, it's Adrasteia.

Zilyana is angry and Adrasteia shocked, but Saradomin explains his logic: if he appointed one of the kings, it would alienate the other kingdoms, and tensions are already running high with the famine. He also can't see the people of Gielinor pledging fealty to an Icyene. He adds that Zilyana's strengths are on the battlefield, not in diplomacy. Adrasteia may be young, but she's also been educated by the best tutors in New Domina. She's wise, humble, brave, and most importantly, she has empathy. Saradomin gives her some advice and then sends out a message to the people of Gielinor, telling them that he has to leave and that Adrasteia will be ruling for him. It takes the last of his power, and after he bids goodbye to the World Guardian-as-was and Adrasteia, he's gone.

The World Guardian-as-was heads to Armadyl's tower. Armadyl says that the tower isn't where he'd want to spend his last moments on Gielinor, and when asked, says that he'd rather be deep in the Wilderness, at the ruins of the farm where he lived with his second husband, Obi'Sooth. He reminisces about his late husband and the home they had together, and then starts talking about how much damage the gods have done to Gielinor, and how much he's lost in the pursuit of power. He apologises for all the damage the gods have done, and then says that the World Guardian-as-was is right to banish them, that the gods need to stop thinking about themselves and go help the people who need it.

When asked where he'll go, Armadyl says he'll go to Tarddiad, as he promised Seren and her people. He doesn't have Seren's aura, so he won't make the crystal shapeshifters' plight worse. He can help ease their suffering and work toward a cure for their plight. He admits that his motivations aren't entirely selfless- he wants to bring the aviansie from Abbinah to Tarddiad, which is a much safer world, and help the elves rebuild. He hopes that in time, both races will realise that they don't need him and can stand alone. He thanks the World Guardian-as-was for letting him build his own destiny, tells them that they're a good friend, and leaves.

The World Guardian-as-was then heads to Kharid-et, where Azzanadra meets with the other Zarosians. He tells them that the gods are leaving Gielinor, which includes him, and that he and Nex will be going to Freneskae, but the others should continue their work on Gielinor. He reminds them that they stand for order and civilisation, and that the Zamorakians are a threat to everything Zaros values, even without their god, so they need to support Saradomin. To begin with, he tells Trindine to work with Adrasteia, as Azzanadra doesn't believe that she has the spine to do everything required of her, so it falls to Trindine to do what Adrasteia can't.

Azzanadra admits to Wahisietel that they've grown apart, and says that he won't ask him to obey Trindine, but since he knows humans better than any of the others, he should walk among them and encourage him to do better, and also keep Akthanakos out of trouble if he can. He thanks the World Guardian-as-was for everything they've done, and tells the others to have faith in one thing: Zaros will return, and the way must be prepared for him. Nex asks about Char, and Azzanadra says that he has no doubt that Zaros is protecting her, but they'll search for her if they can. With that done, Azzanadra and Nex leave, and the others teleport out.

The World Guardian-as-was returns to Adrasteia and confirms that the gods have all left Gielinor. Adrasteia admits that her life has become very complicated- even without the stress of now being the empress, there's still the Zamorakians to consider. Zamorak probably never appointed a successor, and Adrasteia doubts that his followers would have cared much if he had. She's anticipating a civil war between them, and while the Zamorakians may have withdrawn to the Wilderness, it likely won't stay contained for long. Adrasteia wonders how Moia is handling things, and while the World Guardian-as-was isn't sympathetic because of how Moia betrayed them, Adrasteia is. With that, the mini quest is complete.

He then announces his intent to settle in Tarddiad, where he'll establish an Aviansie colony and help free the elves there from being crystal bound, hoping to achieve peaceful co-existence between his and Seren's followers.
