Recap / Rune Scape Dead And Buried

Go To

After the events of Unwelcome Guests, the Raptor tells the player that having killed a bunch of Zemouregal's undead, it's time to press the advantage. However, before he can tell them his plans, he's cut off by someone blowing a horn in the town hall. The player goes to check it out, and finds that a herald from Varrock has arrived to give the player a token of the king and queen's gratitude for all their help: a painting of the king and queen. Once that's done, the Raptor wants to get to the crypt, but Overseer Siv asks the player for a private word: the guards keep getting injured. They may be decent fighters, but the undead are tougher, and true to his word, the Raptor is not a good leader.

As such, the player thinks they need to recruit a guard captain, which Siv agrees with. Siv says that one of the guards looks like a promising candidate, so the player interviews her. Sofia, the candidate, turns out to be a really good prospect, and also has an excellent idea for dealing with the undead: the guards are all melee fighters, but the undead are slow and easy to take out from a distance, so there's no real reason to fight them face to face. As such, Sofia thinks the player should build a rangers' workroom, which would supply the guards with ranged equipment and allow her to train them to use crossbows. The player and the Raptor are on board with this, so Sofia is made the new guard captain and is sent to talk to Bill about the workroom.

Bill still wants to build that inn, but he goes with the workroom plans. Once the player builds it, they check with Sofia that everything's OK and then head to the crypt with the Raptor. The player builds a bridge to replace the one Zemouregal smashed while the Raptor holds off the undead, but then are faced with the locked door to the crypt. Working together, the player and the Raptor find a dragonkin device that emerges from the door, and on the Raptor's advice take it to Reldo. Reldo identifies it as a kind of dream journal- studying it made the user fall into a deep sleep, and the device would inspire them to dream and record the dreams. The Raptor thinks he's qualified to handle it because of the events of Song From The Depths; unfortunately, the device is trapped, and Reldo says that the Raptor has been trapped eternally in a maze made of his own nightmares.

This is obviously a bit inconvenient, so the player has to go rescue him. Reldo tells them that they'll need to drink a potion of dreamless sleep before using the device so they don't get trapped in their own nightmares; luckily, he happens to have one on hand, as an enchanter he 'happens' to know brewed up a batch for him. After drinking it, the player uses the device and enters the Raptor's nightmare, which looks like an endless dark plain... excepting a house. After assuring the Raptor that they are in fact real, the two work together to get to the house. At the house, a young girl appears with the silhouettes of a man and a woman, who she refers to as her parents; the Raptor seems upset by this and claims not to know them, even though this is his nightmare.

The player and the Raptor keep going, and see the house catch fire and the silhouettes of the adults run inside. The Raptor becomes very distressed by this, and says that they need to save the adults. However, as they progress, they see that the parents died in the fire, leaving the little girl an orphan. They manage to reach the girl, but she doesn't respond to the player. When asked why, the Raptor says that the girl died a long time ago, and when asked who she is, the Raptor admits that she is the girl. The camera then does a dramatic spin, revealing that the girl and the Raptor are actually Queen Ellamaria.

When asked about it, Ellamaria admits that it was a compromise: she never wanted to be a queen and hates living a life of luxury, but she loves Roald, so she adopted the guise of the Raptor- as long as she's there when Roald needs her, she can still go out into the world the rest of the time. The player asks why she can't just be a warrior queen, but when Ellamaria married Roald, his grip on the throne wasn't that strong and the dukes were looking for signs of weaknesses. Roald isn't a natural fighter, so being upstaged by a commoner could have been disastrous. When asked, she admits that her rudeness is also something of an act- she's never been gracious, but it helps her mislead people, and apologises for the whole Garden of Tranquillity thing.

The player suggests that now that Roald's grasp on the throne is secure, he and Ellamaria could renegotiate their compromise. Ellamaria likes the idea, but they have to get out of the dream first. They run into nightmare versions of Roald; upon defeating them, a strange version of Roald appears and talks about how his and Ellamaria's time together won't last, before burning alive. They proceed, fight nightmare versions of Bianca and then a strange version of Bianca appears, despite Ellamaria saying that Bianca died after the events of Murder On The Border. Phantom Bianca says that she didn't deserve what happened to her, that she had no choice about trying to kill the king, and says that Ellamaria never deserved to be a queen and treats the citizens like dirt, before appearing to die from poison.

The last nightmares are versions of the Raptor; upon defeating them, a phantom Raptor appears and tells Ellamaria that she's useless and weak. However, it turns into Zemouregal, reading a wall of ancient writings. The player translates the symbols: 'Dragon', 'Vorkath' and 'Necromancy', and then they wake up. The Raptor starts commanding the player to never tell anyone what they saw, before awkwardly changing to thanking them for waking her up. They return to the crypt and find that the guards they left there were killed by necromancy, and Zemouregal already got inside. The inside is revealed to be an ancient dragonkin tomb filled with the remains of dead dragons, as well as some zombies Zemouregal left. There are two murals, one depicting an island somewhere and the other depicting a dragon, along with a table that has been damaged: the surface showed a map, but it's been broken and pieces scattered around by the zombies.

After killing the zombies, the player gets the pieces, returns them to the table and unscrambles it: the map appears to show an island in the Lunar Sea, but they don't recognise it. Upon comparing it to a map the player has, they find that the island isn't on the player's map, so it may have been deliberately hidden. The player speculates that the two murals show the island in question and the island's inhabitant, and the Raptor tells them to copy the map-table and show it to Overseer Siv, who might know more about it. She then tells the player that nobody can know her true identity, and leaves.

Back at the fort, the player shows their copy to Siv, who identifies the area as the ocean north of Rellekka and the island in question as Ungael, an island that the Fremennik avoid because it's rumoured to be guarded by a ferocious dragon, worse than Elvarg. Siv says she'll reach out to her contacts and see if she can charter a ship, and the player heads back to the Raptor. After reporting this to the Raptor, the player and the Raptor agrees that this is an obvious priority as Zemouregal evidently has plans regarding Ungael, so they need to deal with him as soon as possible.
