Recap / Rugrats S 4 E 17 Angelica Nose Best The Pirate Light

Go To

The seventeenth and final episode of the fourth season of Rugrats (1991).

Angelica Nose Best

Angelica gets bitten on the nose by a mosquito, causing her to think her nose is extending like Pinocchio's when she lies.

The Pirate Light

The babies think a gas fitter is a pirate and try to find Stu's "treasure" before he does.

"Angelica Nose Best" provides examples of:

  • Artistic License – Animal Care: After Angelica blames Fluffy for eating Grandpa Lou's box of fundraiser chocolates, Charlotte responds by simply locking Fluffy inside her kitty tree, instead of calling a vet to hopefully stop her from dying by the lethal-to-cats amount of theobromine she supposedly just consumed.
  • Honesty Aesop: Tommy, after listening to an audio tape of Pinocchio, tells Angelica that her nose will grow if she lies. The next day, she blames some of her misdeeds on the babies and pets and believes a bump on her nose (actually a mosquito bite from the previous night) is getting bigger after seeing her warped reflection in a candle holder, prompting her to ask the babies to help her learn to tell the truth.
  • Mosquito Miscreants: A mosquito bites Angelica's nose when she's asleep. She doesn't get sick, but it does swell up and she thinks it's because she lies, like Pinocchio.
  • Never My Fault: Throughout the episode, Angelica blames bad things she did on Spike, Fluffy, and the babies.
  • Pinocchio Nose: Having been read the story of Pinocchio, the babies believe that Angelica's nose will grow when she lies. Thanks to a mosquito bite, the babies and eventually Angelica believe that Angelica's nose is growing.
  • Priceless Louis XIV Vase: Angelica knocks over one of these belonging to Charlotte and blames it on the babies.
  • Punny Title: "Nose Best", because it sounds like "knows best" and Angelica's nose swells up.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: Lou does this with Charlotte when he tries to sell chocolate bars door-to-door. It's especially hilarious considering that she's his daughter in law and he's at one of his sons' houses.
Lou: Hello, sir or madam. I am visiting your house, apartment, or hotel to ask you to help support my club, group, or organization...
  • Rule of Three: Angelica tells three lies in this episode; first, Spike wrecked Didi's jigsaw puzzle, then Fluffy ate Lou's chocolates, and finally, the babies broke Charlotte's vase.
  • Triumphant Reprise: We hear a rendition of the Rugrats theme song once Angelica's nose problem goes away.

"The Pirate Light" provides examples of:

  • Bookends: This episode begins and ends with Stu saying that the pilot light is out.
  • Contrived Coincidence: When the pilot light goes out, the babies mishear this as "pirate light." The repairman Didi hires wears a spotted bandana and single hoop earring.
  • Here We Go Again!: The episode ends with Stu yelling that the pilot light was out again.
  • Human Ladder: The babies form one when they reach for the light switch in an attempt to find the Pirate Light to keep the pirate away.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Lil's ribbon. Tommy takes it from her so she and Phil can distract the repairman long enough so he can snatch the schematic, believing it to be a treasure map, and when he tries to give it back to her, he almost gives it to Phil.
  • Malaproper: When the pilot's light in Tommy's house goes out, the babies hear "pirate's light" and come to believe that the repairman hired to fix it is a pirate coming to raid Tommy's house.
  • Pirate Episode: In this episode, the babies believe that the "pirate light" is out and that the repairman hired to fix the pilot light is a pirate coming to raid Tommy's house, so they try to find Stu's treasure before the repairman does.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When the babies snatch the schematic from the repairman and look over it, Phil believes the X to be under a tree, but Lil tells him that the X is under an arrow. Near the end of the episode, when Stu finds the schematic, he believes he should plug the electrostatic condenser plug next to either a tree or an arrow.
  • Trouser Space: While looking for Stu's treasure so they can get it before the pirate does, Lil looks in several cereal boxes, and puts the plastic prizes from them into her diaper.
  • Twin Switch: Phil and Lil do this to distract the repairman while Tommy takes his schematic.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: The repairman is afraid of dogs, due to having a bad experience with a dalmatian in a previous repair job.
