"Smart Lair"

  • Actor Allusion: Shelldon's theme-color (orange) and his Totally Radical vernacular post-reprogramming is a reference to his voice actor Greg Cipes playing Michelangelo in the 2012 series.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Shelldon.
  • My New Gift Is Lame: The turtles didn't have a problem with Shelldon at first... then it reveals he favored Donnie (And can be painful about it), they try to reprogram, but in a sense, made things worst.
  • Running Gag: The turtles saying "I would never," with Shelldon agreeing "He/They would never." Also vice versa.
  • Smart House: Donnie turns the lair into this to lessen the burden of cleaning up.
  • Surfer Dude: Shelldon talks like this after his reprogramming. See Actor Allusion above for more.
  • There Can Be Only One: Once Shelldon goes haywire, he tries to eliminate Donnie so he can be the new fourth turtle.

"Hot Soup: The Game"

  • All for Nothing: For both Mikey and the Foot Recruit:
    • Foot Recruit — The only Lou Jitsu-related item that she's able to find is the videogame that Mikey had bought, and the Lieutenant claim it's not the "artifact" that they're looking for.
    • Mikey — He succeeds in getting the videogame and is able to play it, but the game proves to not be anything like how it was portrayed that Mikey and his brothers saw. In fact, Splinter's the only one who ends up enjoying the game.
  • Baby Talk: Ralph uses this when he calls Mikey.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Raph really pours into it in this episode—he's totally against Mikey going out to get the videogame by himself and later on, when he calls Mikey, Raph overhears all the commotion over the phone and asks Mikey if he's okay. When Mikey hangs up on him, Raph gets worried and tells Donnie to tap into the security cameras—after seeing the fight between Mikey and the Foot Recruit, Raph says that Mikey needs them and drags Leo and Donnie with him to go save their youngest brother.
    • On a lesser level, Donnie shows off his protective instincts as he was willing to hack into the security system without intentional sarcasm or a begrudging response when Raph sensed Mikey was in danger.
  • Bookends: The beginning starts with the Hot Soup: The Game commercial with Lou shouting "I'll get you, Boss Level!". The end has Splinter stating the very same line while playing the game.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Lou Jitsu film Punch Chowder. When Foot Recruit lies and says that's her favorite LJ-film, Mikey uses this as evidence that she's evil...because only bad guys like Punch Chowder.
  • Foreshadowing: Splinter suddenly wanting to play Hot Soup: The Game at the end of the episode comes entirely out of left field, even when he shouts one of Lou's lines ("I'll get you, Boss Level!"). Of course he'd know that line considering the next episode reveals he's Lou Jitsu and he's trying to relive his glory days.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: The Foot Recruit tries to be this.
  • MacGuffin Title: The aforementioned game both Mickey and the Foot Recruit are fighting for.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Lou Jitsu's co-star in Jitsu for Justice was named Tang Shen, the name of Hamato Yoshi's deceased wife in various TMNT continuities.
    • One of the items in the auction house resembles Ice-Cream Kitty from the 2012 series.
  • Not So Above It All: The Lieutenant and Brute are big fans of the Lou Jitsu, with the former, generally the smarter and more serious of the two, gushing about the films.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite the Lieutenant seemingly not caring if something happens to the Recruit, he and the Brute sprung into action to help her when they believe she was in danger.
    • Later on, the Foot Lieutenant is forgiving of the Recruit not retrieving the correct object and offers to treat her to falafels.
  • Plot Parallel: Both Mikey and the Foot Recruit are trying to complete their own solo missions. Mikey is trying to retrieve a video game cartridge he won at an auction and wants to prove he’s old enough to go out by himself. The Foot Recruit is trying to complete an initiation process to her masters by retrieving a Lou Jitsu artifact. Both are annoyed by their teammates coming to “rescue” them when they’re just about to complete their mission.
  • Spider-Sense: After Mikey hangs up the phone Raph says his "Overprotective Brother sense" is tingling.
