- Metaphorgotten: Smith interprets Caboose's childish ditzy speech, which is worded like he is running for class president of a school, that they "won't need uniforms" because the war will be over and "President Kimball will allow double recess" meaning Kimball will send them out into the real world with them never needing to hold a gun again. When Simmons asks about the "Kool-Aid in the water fountain" bit though, Smith just thinks that part sounds awesome.
- Mistaken for Profound: Lieutenant Smith honestly believes Caboose is one of the wisest people he has ever met. When Caboose gives his campaign speech for being squad leader and words it like he is running for class president, Smith interprets it like a metaphor of how he will bring an end to the war.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Played for Laughs. When Tucker learns that Simmons chose Jensen (who nearly choked on her own spittle) over "The really hot one that plays volleyball", his reaction is, "What the fuck is this!?"
