** "Checkmate": An unintentonal example. The most common ship name for Weiss and Blake at the time was "Monochrome". The writers did not want to give all the combination attacks a shipping name, so actively avoided the Weiss/Blake shipping name when inventing a name of their own for their combination attack, which involves combining their blades, speed and Semblances to slash and parry attacks. Only after the episode aired did the writers find out that "Checkmate" was an existing, secondary name for the ship.

As a result of Checkmate being used as the attack name, it became the more popular ship name after this episode.

Checkmate wasn't an example. The writers made it clear that they only intended to give about half the combo moves a ship name and avoid ship names for the others due to a debate between them over whether it would be ship-baiting to do this. They thought the ship name was Monochrome and didn't know until it was too late that Checkmate was an alternative name for the ship.

** "Checkmate": The ship name was based on Weiss and Yang's black-and-white color scheme similar to the final move made in a game of Chess which takes place on a black-and-white chessboard. This combo attack involves Blake and Weiss using their blades and speed to slash at their opponent, while using their Semblances to maneuver and dodge incoming attacks.

** "Ladybug": Ruby and Blake's ship name is based on their red and black colour scheme, which is like a ladybird. Their combination attack consists of them both using their speed to engage in sliding attacks from opposite sides of the enemy.

As a non-video-game example, she needs to go under Energy Absorption instead (as per the Is This An Example? thread).

* CriticalStatusBuff: Yang's Semblance is revealed to be this.

Added DiffLines:

* EnergyAbsorption: Ruby explains that, when Yang takes damage, her Semblance converts that kinetic energy into strength, making her increasingly more powerful the more damage she takes.

Removed the YMMV pothole to fix the warning on the page. Also, removed some of the names. In the DVD Commentary, the creators talk about how they were split between wanting to use the ship names and concerned they may inadvertantly kick off shipping wars. As a result, they compromised — some of the attack names are based on fandom shipping names and some of the attack names were deliberately chosen to not reflect shipping names. One of them (I think it's 'Checkmate') was chosen because the creators thought it wasn't a ship name (they'd only heard Monochrome) and only found out later that it was a less well-known ship name for the pairing. It therefore isn't an Ascended Meme if it's just by accident.

* AscendedMeme: The fandom is fond of using IdiosyncraticShipNaming for their favorite ships; Ruby uses some of these names for combination attacks.
** "Freezerburn": Weiss and Yang because of their powers.
** "Checkmate": Blake and Weiss.
** "Ladybug": Ruby and Blake because of their theme colours.
** "Bumblebee": Yang and Blake for the same reason.
** "Ice Flower": Ruby and Weiss because of Ruby's surname Rose and Weiss' ice powers.

Added DiffLines:

* LeftTheBackgroundMusicOn: When Yang barges into Junior's club, the music immediately changes to the "Red Like Roses" remix heard in the "Yellow" trailer. Then it starts skipping and glitching—when it's revealed that the DJ in the bear mask was hiding under his turntable, clearly remembering what happened the last time he met Yang. He stays in sight just long enough to lift the needle and kill the music, before slowly slinking out of sight again.
