Welcome aboard!

Ah, hello, Corporal Kane. It is good to finally meet you. I am private Johann Strauss. You have no doubt heard of me.
Tech Strauss

Corporal Kane, enjoying your first day with Rhino Squad? Here's something I found you might be able to use (Grenade Launcher). Now that the hangars are out of commission, we have a clear path to the Air Defense Cannon. Let's move!
Lieutenant Voss

Kane arrives back in the Hangar Perimeter by riding the exit lift from the previous chapter. The region is secured against the Strogg but Rhino Squad's Tech Strauss isn't happy about his perceived lack of sufficient protection and voices his complaint over his radio to a Corporal. If Kane remains long enough, then Strauss will introduce himself.

The turbine engine that was previously used to melt reinforced glass is now being studied. A technician notes that it has to be at least 15% more efficient than anything the SMC currently uses.

Kane meets with Sgt. Morris, and he cracks a joke about Kane being delayed due to "chatting it up with the local Strogg women". They both make haste back to the Air Defense Trenches. Back in the trenches, Lt. Voss and Lance Cpl. Sledge are waiting to accompany Kane. Voss issues a Grenade Launcher to Kane and recaps on the hangars being out of commission, opening a safe path to the Air Defense Cannon.

After battling through the Air Defense Trenches to reach an entrance to the Cannon's base structure, Kane opens the door by climbing in through an opening the roof. Kane and his group battle their way through the structure to the Air Defense Cannon controls, ensuring it is in their possession. The Mobile Command Center they've been fighting to keep safe, named the USS Hannibal, may now begin landing without issue, but a giant reinforced door across the Air Defense Trenches is blocking the route to the landing site. On Voss's orders, Kane hops into the gunner's seat of the Cannon and fires it at the door, destroying it with ease. Kane fights his way back to the Air Defense Trenches while Rhodes arrives to place demolition charges to destroy the Cannon.

Once Kane and his team are clear of the Cannon structure, Rhodes detonates the charges, ensuring the Strogg can never use the Cannon again. Kane makes haste to the MCC Landing Site proper to await the USS Hannibal's landing. The Hannibal destroys an array of turrets overlooking the field to remove the infantry threat. Once it lands, Kane makes his way to the underside ramp and goes inside along with the others, ready to be briefed on his squad's next mission.

Again, this chapter marks the introduction of the versatile Grenade Launcher, a powerful weapon for dealing with entrenched Strogg without placing yourself in the line of fire.

This Chapter provides examples of:

  • The Battlestar: The USS Hannibal, the Mobile Command Center in question. It's equipped with drop pods to carry strike teams, as you'll discover later on.
  • BFG: The Air Defense Cannon; once captured, Kane gets the honor of using it to send a giant door flying.
  • Continue Your Mission, Dammit!: Morris does not like waiting on you. However, standing around is necessary to hear some extra dialogue.
  • Grenade Launcher: The Splash Damage rivals the Rocket Launcher and the grenades can be bounced around corners to harm lurking Strogg.
  • Grease Monkey: A technician analyzing a Strogg turbine engine is impressed with its efficiency over the best SMC models.
  • Insufferable Genius: Strauss is finally met in person, and he refuses to repair a power transfer because he does not like having insufficient protection for his comfort level.
