Operation: Wasteland is the fourth of six operations in the Call of the Machine expansion that comes with the 2023 remastered version of Quake II.

It puts you in the role of Positivity, one of the marines in charge of finding the Strogg Discs that contain the necessary data about the location of the Strogg Maker. He lands nearby an uplink tower, having to delve deep into these installations as well as its adjacent junkyard in order to retrieve said disc.

The levels comprising the unit are "Uplink Tower", "Heavy Water", "Junkyard" and "McGee Station".

This unit shows examples of:

  • Book Ends: The unit not only begins and ends in "Uplink Tower", the final battle takes place in the same area Positivity dropped in.
  • Creator Cameo: "McGee Station" is named after former Id developer American McGee (of American McGee's Alice fame), who also had a hand in developing Quake II.
  • Expy Coexistence: In "Heavy Water", Gekks can be found alongside Mutants. Gekks are the weaker version of the Mutant, sporting a pitiful ranged attack instead of a Deadly Lunge.
  • Final Boss: A Tank Commander with a Power Shield called simply "Commander".
  • Flunky Boss: The Commander fights summoning monsters in addition to its regular arsenal.
  • Mid-Boss: A Carrier named "Garbage Carrier" who summons Stalkers rather than Flyers.
  • Secret Level: "McGee Station", accessed in the "Heavy Water" level by pushing a button around a set of stairs that reveal a room with a teleporter.
